I cannot recall any major happening or disaster due to fake news in Singapore...so why they sudden attention and focus on it.

The timely fashion this Select Committee hearing being set up is perhaps to counter anymore attempts by the siblings of a certain well known and active politician to publish what is deemed as "fake news" in the social media concerning filial piety and the fate of a bungalow.

If only they set up a Select Committee with a fraction of that budget to look at loan shark activities in Singapore instead.

What is so special about fake news?

At least there are physical signs to create a rumor. When you see smoke from a distance, it was rumored that there was a huge fire. Fake news are grey depending on the person hearing it wanting it to be true or fake. For example Shit Times reported that it has done some "survey" and result showed 80% loves GST hike or 97% think SMRT has improved it services. The govt think it is true but netizens think it is fake. Netizen put up video to show that Grace Hu has caused dismay for chopping reserved parking lot, the govt think it is fake and kept quiet (silence is admittance of fake news) but evidence showed the video is true. This Select Comittee is to nap netizen from spreading the truth and freed the MSM for spreading fake news. What is true and what is fake is a matter of politcal interest depending on which side of the camp you are in and you know which camp the select committees are largely made of.
