SEPANG: Nuan Nuan, the offspring of panda pair Xing Xing and Liang Liang at Zoo Negara, has left Malaysian shores after being cared and bred for at the Giant Panda Conservation Centre at the National Zoo in Kuala Lumpur for almost two years.

Born on Aug 18, 2015 to Xing Xing (FuWa) and Liang Liang (FengYi), Nuan Nuan, which means warmth, will be returned to Dujiangyan Panda Base in Sichuan, China.

The move is in compliance with the Malaysia-China Giant Panda International Conservation Agreement whereby any panda cub born in Malaysia is to be returned to China upon the age of two.

The agreement between the two countries was signed in 2012, commemorating the 40th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations.

The two-year old female cub Nuan Nuan was on board MASKargo flight MH6476 for her flight home, leaving her parents to continue their 10-year stay in Malaysia.

She is expected to reached Chengdu at 10pm (local time) tonight before being send to Dujiangyan Panda Base.

Nuan Nuan, which weighs 82kg,was born within 15 months of her parents' arrival in May 2014.

KUALA LUMPUR: Born at the Giant Panda Conservation Centre at Kuala Lumpur’s Zoo Negara in August 2015, two-year-old female cub Nuan Nuan is now set to return home to China.

Nuan Nuan was born to her parents Feng Yi and Fu Wa – the giant panda pair which arrived with great fanfare in Malaysia on May 21, 2014 on a 10-year loan from China.

The agreement between the two countries was signed in 2012, commemorating the 40th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations.

As part of the deal, any panda cubs born in Malaysia should be returned to China once it reaches maturity at the age of two.

Nuan Nuan will leave Zoo Negara on Nov 14 and she will be sent directly to Dujiangyan Panda Base in Sichuan where her parents came from.

Zookeepers who have been looking after Nuan Nuan since she was born expressed sadness at her imminent departure.

"I am going to miss playing with her. She is a playful cub. She makes me laugh, (these are) experiences I will cherish," said Akmal Hadi.

Meanwhile his colleague Ahmad Nizam was worried about separating Nuan Nuan from her mother Feng Yi.

“Her father Fu Wa will probably forget about her but her mother Feng Yi will feel lost when she is gone," said Ahmad Nizam.

Nuan Nuan is now undergoing crate training where she is placed in a special cage for a few hours a day to familiarise herself with having limited space for movement. She will also be separated from her mother and will only be exhibited to the public during weekends and public holidays.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who was at the Zoo Negara on Wednesday (Oct 5) to attend Nuan Nuan’s farewell party, said the zoo is keeping its fingers crossed for the birth of a second panda cub.

"It's the environment here that somehow allows the giant panda to conceive easily. In some countries, they tried for 10 years (and they’re) still not successful, (even after) using artificial insemination. So we are lucky to have a giant panda that conceived months after she arrived," he said.

After her birth, a nationwide competition was launched to name the panda cub. Dr Wan Junaidi said then that “Nuan Nuan” was picked out of a pool of nearly 23,000 suggestions from the Malaysian public.

He added that the name, which translates to friendliness, best exemplified the diplomatic relationship between Malaysia and China.

Feng Yi and Fu Wa, who are both on loan from Beijing, are scheduled to return to China by 2024.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Nuan Nuan (which means warmth), the first Malaysian-born female giant panda cub, will head back to China on Nov. 14, more than two years after her parents unexpectedly gave birth to her on Aug. 18, 2015.

Wan Junaidi, Malaysia's minister of natural resources and environment, made the announcement at a farewell ceremony on Thursday at Malaysia's national zoo.

Nuan Nuan, like its name, has brought so much joy to all Malaysians and visitors to the Giant Panda Conservation Center (GPCC) of the national zoo, said Wan Junaidi at the ceremony.

Over the past 26 months, Nuan Nuan's growth and development has been good, said Wan Junaidi, adding she is currently active, bonds well with her mother and in good health.

Describing sending back the panda cub as "a very difficult decision to make," Wan Junaidi said Malaysia is returning Nuan Nuan to China to give her sufficient time to adapt to her natural habitat, citing an agreement reached between China and Malaysia which stipulated that any giant panda born in Malaysia shall be returned to China once the cub has reached its maturity age of two years old.

Mat Naim, director of the GPCC, told Xinhua that Nuan Nuan is currently undergoing crate training where she is put into a special cage for a few hours a day, a necessary step for the panda cub to familiarize itself with the limited space of movement when going on a plane.

When talking about the possibility for Nuan Nuan's parents, the two pandas loaned by China to Malaysia in 2014, to have another baby panda, Wan Junaidi said he was told that "because of the environment here is something unique, and the possibility is high and it's not a possibility but it's high probability" to bear another cub.
