SINGAPORE - From January, avid gardeners will get to prune, water, grow and harvest plants at the Istana up to three times a month.

They will be able to do so at seven to eight areas inside the Istana, including the Spice Garden, Japanese Garden and the front lawn of the Istana.

The Istana will be open to volunteer gardeners on three days each month, from 9am to noon.

These will be the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of the first week of each month except January, when the open days will be in the second week.

Volunteers can pick which session they want to attend once they have signed up. They do not need experience and will be guided by officers from the National Parks’ Board (NParks). NParks will provide the gardening tools.

About 50 people have already signed up.

Mr Ho Et Wan, 70, a retiree who used to work in the marine sector, said he will be volunteering at the Istana gardens once a month with his wife.

The pair helped to plant chilli plants in the Istana's Spice Garden at Thursday's launch.

"It is the atmosphere, the volunteers working together and having a good time and relaxing, that I love. I am also happy to be contributing to nature," Mr Ho said.

His wife, Mrs Linda Ho, a retired school teacher, said she loves looking out for plants from her childhood.

"It's like taking myself back to the days of my youth," said Mrs Ho, who does volunteer gardening at Fort Canning Park and Gardens by the Bay as well.

Another volunteer, special needs teacher Jenny Lim said: "I also love the Istana gardens and want to know how it stays so beautiful."

This new Volunteer Gardeners@Istana programme was launched on Thursday (Dec 14) by President Halimah Yacob. She had said earlier that she wanted to make the Istana more accessible to ordinary Singaporeans through new programmes.

Madam Halimah said on Thursday: "The purpose is to encourage Singaporeans who have been doing or are interested in community gardening to come and contribute their ideas and experiences, and help to shape the gardens in the Istana.

"The whole idea is also to engage and reach out to Singaporeans so that they feel there is a part they can play in the Istana garden."

On Thursday, 20 President's Challenge beneficiaries from the Yong-en Care Centre also visited the grounds for a garden tour.

Madam Halimah planted a nutmeg tree, a tropical tree cultivated for two spices from its fruits - the nutmeg and mace.

Before this latest programme, Madam Halimah in November launched the Picnic@Istanaseries, under which four picnics will be held a year.

Before the new programmes, the public could visit the Istana only during five Open Houses each year, during Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Deepavali, Labour Day and National Day.

NParks, which helped develop the new volunteer gardening programme, has often used the Istana grounds as a test bed to experiment with plants potentially suitable for Singapore.

Mr Wong Tuan Wah, group director of Fort Canning and Istana at NParks, said the new programme might be expanded to more days if there is overwhelming response.

Makes no sense for these volunteer gardeners in the Istana. Nobody benefits from it. Furthermore everyone of them must undergo security vetting. Unnecessary costs to the taxpayer. Waste time for security personnel at the gates who have to check them and also monitor them.

These PLPs can contribute in more meaningful social causes or if they are keen on gardening, why not the council allow them to take over gardening within their own neighbourhood and save on some labour costs. Why must be at the Istana.

Why not help at old folks home, orphanages and other such places and do up their gardens.

these PLP will be more if they volunteer nursing homes and hospices.

Making the Istana more accessible
President Halimah launched the Volunteer Gardens@Istana programme on Dec. 14, 2017.

Members of the public can visit the Istana gardens and work in them for three days a month — Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday — from 9am to 12pm.

No experience is needed to volunteer.

The programme embodies Halimah’s idea of making the Istana grounds more open to the public.

Halimah said during the launch:

“The purpose is to encourage Singaporeans who have been doing or are interested in community gardening to come and contribute their ideas and experiences, and help to shape the gardens in the Istana. The whole idea is also to engage and reach out to Singaporeans so that they feel there is a part they can play in the Istana garden.”

More accessible
The volunteer garden programme follows Halimah’s promise to make the Istana more accessible to everyday Singaporeans.

This is in addition to the earlier Picnic@Istana initiative, where members of the public can picnic on its grounds four times a year, as well as the five existing open houses during public holidays every year when the public can visit the Istana.

About 50 people have signed up for the volunteer garden programme so far.

According to Wong Tuan Wah, group director of Fort Canning and Istana at NParks, the programme might be expanded if there is an “overwhelming response”.

Since Desmond started the trend towards volunteerism the floodgates are now wide open! Very soon every single job in Singapore will be done by volunteers.

Capitalism has been turned on its head in sunny sinkieland. The country will soon be as egalitarian as it comes.

Absolutely agree. These institutions need more assistance. Not the Istana.

We are paying S$1,000,000 for a Kebun, we must be the stupidest people on this earth. Any sensible taxpayers anywhere in the world will protest that their President is so free, that he/she, can have so much free time, supervising "volunteers" doing gardening.

They should have paid Halimah the 'basic salary' of S$800 per month, with free, food & lodging plus transportation. Since, she is so free. Cousin Tony says, it was a tough job.

Aren't we stupid...paying so much for a sELECTED "Kebun".!!!!

That part of the 'garden' is restricted to Halimah, it has money growing from trees, gold bars sprouting from bushes & the latest, bitcoin ATM's that spit out only S$1,000 notes. You think, the 'boss' will allow this 'gardener' to wander into this part of the 'garden'?

Hamilah job is to supervise the laundry ( soon that will have volunteers also), Area Cleaning ( ditto), Kitchen ( ditto), the garden, polish the silverware after 'polishing the bosses balls', dust the furnitures & chairs ( volunteer also).

Then, stir the big Nasi Briyani pot once a year, attend charity shows, go to old age, disable, unable, children's, nursing homes.

Welcome foreign dignitaries etc.. Check the Instana household expenses..for the ledgers & keys to the reserves are just duplicates..

It is a very cushy & easy job for an overpaid Kebun. Her job is like this:

The priorities of these PLPs, in life are different. Or maybe, they are like her, they don't know their priorities in life/work.

We need her to identify and flag those who not doing good for our nation I believe she is far from the cream of the corp from our local malay community. I know a few malays who led their companies to greatness, including the tough O&G industry, (not just the contender Farid Khan)
