Catalonia referendum heads for climax

It was the sight of armed Spanish national police last week storming Catalan government offices and arresting officials that convinced Jordi Herrera that the region needed to be separate from Spain.

“I was never sure we needed to be independent until then,” says the 36-year-old bank worker, on the edges of a rally on Friday. “It made me so angry … I realised that Spain really owns us and can do what they like with us.”

With thousands of Spanish state police set to flood the streets of Catalonia this weekend to stop Sunday’s vote on independence, which the courts have ruled illegal, there are fears that the clampdown risks bringing moderates over to the independence cause.

Thousands of Catalans gathered at designated polling stations on Sunday morning as they sought to defy Spanish authorities by voting in a banned independence referendum that has raised fears of unrest in the wealthy northeastern region.

“I have got up early because my country needs me,”
- Eulalia Espinal, a 65-year-old pensioner who started queuing with around 100 others outside one polling station, a Barcelona school, in rain at about 5 a.m. (0300 GMT).

The region of 7.5 million people has an economy larger than that of Portugal.

Johor is in a similar situation as Catalonia.
The Royal family must be watching in envy.

Will they be next?

Catalonia has been trying to break off and form their own country for years. They even have (or had) their own pro independence terrorist group which carried out bombings in Spain. The origin of Catalan culture is still a mystery according to anthropologists. Despite being in the south, their language root isn't Latin but Scandinavian

Catalonia contributes 20% of taxes to Spain. Catalonia is too valuable for Spain to let go, and no European country will recognize an independent Catalonia.

Hope Malaysia breaks up like former Yugoslavia

Given the overwhelming vote for secession and police violence, I think Catalonia will be a de-facto sovereign state like Taiwan.

Catalonia expected to declare independence officially on Monday.

I hope Spain sends in the tanks and ground troops to burn and destroy the Catalan villages like what the Burmese did to the peaceful rohingya. Drive the fucking Catalans over the mountains into France. Iberia Spain belongs only to the spanish. Illegals not welcome!

Imagine Sarawak claiming independence?

Sarawak and sabah will not go independent without Indonesia and Philippines respectively having their paws in it. The Confrontation started over the formation of Malaysia. When it breaks up, bullets will be fired again.

The Spanish sausage. Then there's the Basque nationalism too

Sometimes I wonder, is it old wounds that didn't heal properly?

Sabah and Sarawak are prime candidates for a new nation.

Looking back in history, the Brunei Sultan can easily lay claims to Sarawak and Sabah. Then again, what's stopping the Sulu Sultanate from doing the same? Hmm...
