Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar says laundrette owner must apologise to him and people of Johor because 'he has made Johoreans very angry and embarrassed'.

PETALING JAYA: The Sultan of Johor has warned a laundrette in Muar to stop its practice of allowing only Muslims to use its services or he will personally shut it down.

The order by Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar comes as the issue of the “Muslims-only laundrette” generated much debate over the past few days, after a photo of the laundrette with a sign, “Only For Muslims”, had gone viral on social media.

“I cannot accept this nonsense. This is Johor, which belongs to Bangsa Johor and it belongs to all races and faiths. This is a progressive, modern and moderate state.

“This is not a Taliban state and as the Head of Islam in Johor, I find this action to be totally unacceptable as this is extremist in nature,” the Johor ruler was quoted as saying by The Star.

Sultan Ibrahim told the daily that he had also ordered the state Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Abdul Mutalip Abd Rahim, the religious council and the district council to investigate the matter.

“From now on, I am directing the state executive council and all the councils to insist that any business owners who carry out such blatant discriminatory practices should have their licences revoked. Don’t mess around with your narrow-minded religious prejudices,” Sultan Ibrahim was quoted as saying.

Taking particular aim at the owner of the laundrette, Sultan Ibrahim said his actions were an embarrassment to the state.

“I want the owner to apologise to me and the people of Johor. He has made Johoreans very angry and embarrassed because this is not the Johor we want.

“The owner has gone against the vision of a united, harmonious, moderate and tolerant Johor. If he still insists on carrying on the Muslim-only practice, he can leave Johor.

“I suggest he set up shop in Afghanistan. His thinking is sick and goes against everything that Johor stands for,” Sultan Ibrahim told The Star.

The ruler also warned the owner not to be coy in trying to diffuse the issue after the laundrette had been said to have changed its sign from “Muslims-only” to “Muslim-friendly”.

“Don’t try to be clever. It’s still the same. The owner needs to have his brains cleaned up.

“I want to put a stop to such extremism. Extremism has no place in my state. We take pride in being Bangsa Johor and I want to know where the owner of this launderette learnt his Islam?

“Islam teaches the faithful to be tolerant and respect other people and faiths,” Sultan Ibrahim said, according to The Star.

The Johor ruler also criticised the laundrette owner over the implications of having a “Muslims-only” policy for his business.

“Is he saying only the clothes of Muslims are clean and those of non-Muslims are unclean? That’s what he means, I believe.

“I wonder where this launderette owner washes his clothes when he is overseas?” The Star had quoted the ruler as saying.

Sultan Ibrahim’s response to the whole debacle follows that of his son, Tunku Idris, who had taken to Instagram on Monday to criticise the Muslims-only laundrette in Muar.

Tunku Idris had posted a picture of a news report on the matter and added the caption: “Is this for real? This is too extreme. I’m appalled.”

In two subsequent posts, Tunku Idris uploaded an image with the text: “The Quran says, ‘speak good to people’ and that it doesn’t say to ‘speak good only to Muslims’.”

The second image was of a Quranic verse which states: “For you is your religion, and for me is my religion”.

Meanwhile, Sultan Ibrahim said that he was “deeply appalled” by the laundrette owner’s actions, adding that if such matters were not stopped, it would lead to more narrow-minded actions in the name of Islam.

“I could not keep quiet on the issue, as if this was allowed to go unnoticed, then next we will have taxis for only Muslims or non-Muslims.”

The "Muslims only" signboard has been removed following the Johor Sultan's decree.

MUAR: The owner of the controversial "Muslim-only" launderette here has apologised for his actions and will obey Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar's decree to remove a signboard limiting its services to those of the faith.

"I regret the issue and I will obey His Majesty's command," said the owner of the launderette in Taman Seri Cempaka, who refused to be named, adding that he immediately took down the sign Wednesday morning following the news published in The Star.

"I was not aware about it at first. I was only informed about Tuanku's comments after my friends alerted me and forwarded me the news article," he said on Wednesday.

Checks by The Star on Wednesday showed that the sign was no longer displayed at the launderette's entrance but remained open for business.

It was reported that Sultan Ibrahim ordered the controversial Muslim-only launderette in Muar to immediately stop its discriminatory practice or risk being shut down by him.

"I cannot accept this nonsense. This is Johor, which belongs to Bangsa Johor and it belongs to all races and faiths. This is a progressive, modern and moderate state.

"This is not a Taliban state and as the Head of Islam in Johor, I find this action to be totally unacceptable as this is extremist in nature," he said.

His Majesty said he also ordered the state Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Abdul Mutalip Abd Rahim, the religious council and the district council to investigate the matter.

Pictures of the launderette went viral last week over a sign at its entrance which said that only Muslims were allowed to use its self-service washing machines.

PETALING JAYA: The Sultan of Johor's firm and moderate stand on the controversial Muslim-only launderette in Muar has earned overwhelming support online.

An avalanche of "Daulat Tuanku" responses have appeared on The Star Online's official Facebook page, in response to Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar's call for the business to immediately stop its discriminatory practice or risk being shut down.

Muhammad Alif Azrai Norizan threw his support behind the Ruler: "His Majesty nails it!! He hammers the final nail with three final words 'NO! NO! NO!' Long Live His Majesty Field Marshal Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar!"

Jai Gaanesh said His Majesty had spoken and that "we are all thankful" for the timely intervention.

"We need more people to speak like this! His Majesty also prompted the councils to wake up and go act accordingly. This is a good example of good leadership," he added.

Chong Sau Kang was similarly grateful: "Thank goodness someone spoke up. Our society is becoming more and more polarised."

Ahmad Kamaruddin Hashim urged others to emulate the tolerant practices displayed in Sarawak: "It's because of thinking like this that there is a racial divide in Semenanjung (the peninsula)."

Kannagy Palanisamy gave His Majesty further kudos: "You are the only one who walks the talk. We love and honour you. May God Bless You and the State of Johor always."

"I applaud the Sultan of Johor, here is a man I respect as Head of State. Insightful, tolerant, inclusive, of honour and integrity," wrote Nancy Kulawsky.

"We need people of substance who are not afraid to stand up for what is right, who have direction for Malaysia and can govern for all Malaysians as One People and One Nation!"

Elsewhere, on Instagram, comedian and moderation advocate Harith Iskander posted, "Once in a while you read a headline that gives hope to the voice of reason."

He accompanied that post with a picture of The Star's frontpage story today on the Sultan's call.

However, some commentators on The Star Online's Facebook page held differing opinions.

Disagreeing with the Sultan, Ahmad Niza Abdullah said that it was up to the laundrette owner to decide what was best for his business.

"… if they decide to lose out on business that non-Muslims may bring, it's their decision," he said.

"Is it better to have that sign or for the owner to usher off every non-Muslim that walks into the place? They can take away the sign, it won't change the owner's beliefs," he added.

Athithen Yob-Selatan said all businessmen have their own business plans, while he does not agree with a Muslim-only policy, "At least he's being honest."

Nadirah H. Rodzi was also against the idea of the Johor Ruler shutting the business down.

"Should let them do it themselves, I think that would be more satisfying to some people," said Nadirah H. Rodzi.

Nor Elmie also voiced her respect for the laundry owner's decision, saying "Let him be."

Terrence Tan did not see the need for intervention, arguing that the business would eventually tank in the free market.

Pictures of the launderette went viral last week when reports showed it had a sign saying that only Muslims were allowed to use its machines.
