Serious Malaysia might station Chinese rocket launchers in Johor to threaten us, thanks PAP

Thanks to the PAP, Singapore is now caught in the middle of a dangerous game of one upmanship by the US and China. I refer to the recent reports that China wants to loan to Malaysia a battery of mobile rocket launcher system, a powerful weapon that can fire 8-10 rounds of rocket equipped with up to 250lb warheads within 60 seconds, then scoot off and hide some where to reload an appear and fire again. As you can imagine, such a system is very hard to defeat. By the time you locate the source of the rocket firing, the whole system on an all wheel drive platform would have moved on to another location or gone into hiding. In the hands of a good crew and battery commander, they are very difficult to locate and destroy. During the First Gulf war when Iraq fired an older system known as Scud at Israel, the Coalition spend much resources and air craft to seek and destroy them. They were hard enough to find in a flat featureless desert environment, they must be that much harder to find in our type of terrain.

This is an outright provocation, there is no other way to interpret this. China has long been sore about the accommodations the PAP has made for the US Navy at Changi Naval Base, as well as the aircraft repair and maintenance facilities at Paya Lebar for the USAF, as well as Singapore being a port of call and liberty port for the US pacific Fleet. Bearing in mind that both China and US are rachetting up the sabre rattling and preparing for a conflict in the south china seas. And Knowing that Singapore is a major logistics base for the US Navy and with substantial ability to repair US Naval vessels and aircraft, what better way to negate and threaten this then by basing the aforementioned rockets in the backyard of Singapore.

These Chinese rockets, the AR 3 MLRS (Multiple Launch rocket system) can in within seconds, destroy the Changi Naval base, destroy hangers and repair depots at Paya Lebar and elsewhere, crater runways and possibly even sink several US Naval ships in port. The 280 km radius also puts all US naval assets under threat as they transit through the Straits of Malacca and as they approach Singapore and its surrounding areas. While true that US Naval vessels have very good anti missile defence systems such as the 20 mm Gatling gun type Phalanx Close in Weapons System (CIWS), and Sea Sparrow anti missile missiles, what makes the AR 3 system so deadly is that it can be fitted not only with conventional unguided warheads but also be fitted with guided missile warheads, and when fired in salvos with as many as 30 missiles going for one target, makes it very difficult to defend against. Anti missile defences on ships are designed to defeat the one or 2 missiles fired at a time from a single aircraft or even from a flight of aircraft. But 30 missiles at a time is an altogether different prospect. This in effect will turn the AR 3 into a mini ballistic inter theatre missile system. A very frightening prospect is this.

The fact that the Chinese are so eager to have this missile battery installed in Southern Malaysia, across the causeway from Singapore, in the state of Johor is not lost on the Americans and the PAP. How eager are they? They are so eager, they are prepared to give the Malaysians the AR 3 for free, on a 50 year loan, saving the Malaysians the cost of buying them outright. Wow, what a deal. Why couldn’t the RSAF get its F-16s and F-15 on a 50 year loan too? The loan is set up as a purchase to own type of deal where, I suppose the Malaysians will pay on installment over 50 years. I wonder how agreeable the Chinese will be to forgiving the loan down the road, I am sure they will be. The Chinese will “loan” the Malaysians 12 MLRS system, good for 4 batteries. One battery targeting the Changi Naval Base, One battery targeting Paya Lebar, One targeting Tengah Air Base, and one targeting the oil storage and tank farm facilities on Jurong Island, would decapitate singapore’s abilities in a 60 second salvo.

But who will man these MLRS when and if they arrive? I am sure that Chinese advisors and technicians must be on hand to help operate and maintain them. You can be sure that since these are still technically Chinese property, until paid in full, the Chinese will try to keep them operational at 100%. This would be in stark contrast to other weapons systems operated by the Malaysian armed forces and air forces where weapon availability is somewhat less then 100%. But who will actually control them? The Chinese or the Malaysians? Even if this report is untrue, this would set an interesting future precedent. What if China offers to loan Malaysia 3 squadrons of Chengdu J-20 Stealth Fighters? Or 3 battalions of Type 99 MBT? They would then have the ability to point dagger at the US base of operations in Singapore.

If this gets hot, and the Chinese MLRS are fired from Malaysia into Singapore, what can the PAP do? They have just put Singaporeans in the way of these missiles. We are just like puppets being manipulated by the US and China. Thanks to our close affiliation with the Jewish State, and the US, I expect all our muslim neighbours to hate us. But I never bargain that even far away countries like China could potentially also be our enemies one day. I bet the PAP never saw this coming. I wonder if we can request to be a colony of the UK again, and let Whitehall handle our foreign relations? Because, as far as I can see, the PAP is just not cutting it.

Just my 2 cents

[h=1]China offers rocket launchers, radar system to Malaysia - reports[/h]

REUTERS 10/08/2017

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – China will offer Malaysia advanced rocket launchers and a radar system to be based on the southern tip of the Southeast Asian country, media reports have said, in a move that could raise security concerns for neighbouring Singapore. The offer was to be made by a delegation of Chinese officials who visited Malaysia on Wednesday for the launch of a $13 billion rail project being built by China, news portal The Malaysian Insight reported, quoting an unidentified source. Up to 12 units of the AR3 multiple-launch artillery rocket system (MLRS) will be offered to Malaysia in a purchase programme with a loan period of 50 years, the source told the news website. The size of the loan or the cost of the ordnance was not disclosed. The type of radar system was also not disclosed. Singapore’s Straits Times also reported the offer, quoting a senior Malaysian government source on Thursday as saying that it was “lightly touched on” during talks between Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and Chinese State Councillor Wang Yong at the ground-breaking ceremony for the rail project. The Straits Times said a firm decision on the proposal would only be made during a planned visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Malaysia later this year. Reuters could not verify the reports independently. “This is the first time I’m hearing it,” Malaysia’s Treasury Secretary, General Mohammad Irwan Serigar Abdullah, said when asked by Reuters about the Chinese proposal. China’s foreign and defence ministries did not respond immediately respond to requests for comment. Singapore’s foreign affairs and defence ministries were also not immediately available for comment. China has been upset with Singapore in recent months because of what China has viewed as undue interference by the city-state over the South China Sea dispute and Singapore’s close defence ties with the United States and self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as a renegade province. The AR3 artillery rocket system was built by China specifically for export. It first came into use in 2011 and is regarded as one of the most powerful MLRS units available. Malaysia signed a deal to purchase four littoral mission ships from China last year.

[h=1]Malaysia, China exploring radar and missile system in Johor[/h]
[h=2]Beijing's proposal reflects widening defence and trade ties between both countries, says report[/h]Leslie Lopez Regional Correspondent In Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia will consider China's proposal to set up a regional counter-intelligence centre in Johor equipped with radar surveillance and a missile system.
According to a senior Malaysian government source, the proposal for the radar and missile system was "lightly touched on" during talks between Prime Minister Najib Razak and visiting Chinese State Councillor Wang Yong after the ground- breaking ceremony of the East Coast Rail Link project in Kuantan yesterday.
The Malaysian Insight, a Kuala Lumpur-based news website, had reported that China would offer Malaysia up to 12 units of the AR3 multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) at the ceremony.

The report, citing sources, said the offer reflected the widening defence and trade ties between the two countries.

The government source told The Straits Times that discussions on the matter were still continuing, and that a firm decision would be made only when Datuk Seri Najib meets Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is expected to make an official visit to Malaysia some time in November.
According to defence site military-today.com, China's AR3 artillery rocket system is used to engage remote strategic targets like command centres, and is capable of launching conventional rockets as well as guided missiles with a range of up to 280km.

"MLRS is usually for surface-to- surface attack," said Dr Wu Shang- Su, a research fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies.
He noted that longer-range units based in Johor could even reach Indonesia, and those with guided missiles were "capable of precise attacks on important targets".
The proposal to expand Malaysia's growing economic ties into military defence arrangements first came up during Mr Najib's meeting with Mr Xi in Bejing in mid-May, at which the Chinese leader put forward a wish list of initiatives.
These included ensuring China's lead role in developing two high- speed rail links that would connect Kuala Lumpur with Singapore and with Bangkok, a dedicated oil pipeline to serve China's energy needs, and joint explorations between Chinese and Malaysian state oil companies to exploit resources in the South China Sea.
According to Malaysian government officials, Mr Najib will not refuse China's offers to boost Malaysia's security capabilities if the financial assistance to take on these projects is attractive.

Obviously this is aiming at Singapore and also it is aiming at Sembawang. There are US military ships berth at Sembawang.

If I am not mistaken, Changi naval base is the only one deep enough to take a US Carrier. I am sure they will wait for one to come to port and whack it while its a sitting target. If you had to chose between a naval base that can take a carrier and one that cannot, you will aim for the obvious choice.

we can only bribe Johore Sultan now to ban China military equipment in Johore.
However Singapore relationship with Johore Sultan is not good due to the Singapore and Malaysia bridge project

What sort of a dare is that? A radioactive leak of any kind at a nuclear power station in Changi will render the whole of Sinkieland inhospitable to all life forms.

Malaysia denies report of China's offer of rocket launchers, radar system for Johor

10 Aug 2017 09:03PM
Asia Pacific
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's defence ministry has denied a report that China has offered Malaysia advanced rocket launchers and a radar system to be based in Johor - the state closest to Singapore.

Deputy Defence Minister Johari Baharum told Channel NewsAsia on Thursday (Aug 10) that no such offer had been made.

"No such thing. No such discussion. So you ask the Malaysian Insight, ask them," he said when asked if the defence ministry is aware of such a deal which was first reported by the Malaysian Insight, a KL-based news website.

Malaysia's defence minister's office has also issued a denial to Channel NewsAsia. They said their ministry is unaware of any such deal.

According to the Malaysian Insight report, a high-level delegation led by President Xi Jinping's special envoy had reportedly made the offer on Wednesday (Aug 9), while in Malaysia for the launch of a railway project financed by China.

The news portal, quoting China-based sources, said up to 12 units of the AR3 multiple launch rocket system would be shipped to Malaysia in a purchase programme with a loan period of 50 years.

The report said the rocket system with a top range of 220km would be located in Johor along with a radar system.

But at the groundbreaking event of the East Coast Ral Link project on Wednesday, Malaysia's Treasury secretary-general said he was not aware of any such deal.

Speaking to reporters at the event, Irwan Serigar said: "This is the first time I'm hearing of this, from you."

In May, the Malaysian Insight reported that the Chinese president had raised concerns about the presence of Islamic State in the region, during Prime Minister Najib's visit to Beijing.

It was then that he reportedly offered to install air defence and radar systems as a joint initiative to combat terrorism and gather intelligence.

But defence analysts Channel NewsAsia spoke to have questioned the accuracy of the report and the rationale behind placing rocket launchers in Johor, given there is already one at the Gemas Military camp north of the state's capital.

Dzirhan Mahadzir from Jane's Defence Weekly's Malaysia correspondent questioned the accuracy of the report quoting China based sources.

He said it is "very unlikely" Malaysia would position the rocket launch system in Johor as there are already two such units in Gemas where there is a military facility.

"As for radar system, there is already one in Bukit Ibam, Pahang and another in Bukit Lunchu Johor, why is there a need for another radar system?" he added.

Malaysia and Singapore have their own defence cooperation as well.

Both are in the Five Power Defence Arrangement - one of the world's oldest military partnerships - along with UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Even a half baked army would not put its assets next to to the border unless they are mobilising. It also sends the wrong message and even if they go ahead and do just what is reported, we are not going to going to let it happen. Its practically an act of war. This is 101 even for a banana republic's military academy.
