SINGAPORE - The grandson of the man who founded Metro was acquitted in court on Friday (May 12) of the drug trafficking charges against him.

After a three-day trial, District Judge Jasvender Kaur found Ong Jenn, now 41, not guilty of two counts of engaging in a conspiracy with convicted drug offender Mohamad Ismail Abdul Majid, 45, to traffic cannabis on Oct 30, 2014.

But the trafficking charges were amended to two counts of attempting to be in possession of the drug - 385.1g of a cannabis mixture and 92.68g of cannabis - between Oct 30 and Oct 31, 2014.

Of the arrests, the most shocking was that of a former High Court judge’s son, Dinesh Singh Bhatia, 34, a private equity investor.

His father is Amarjeet Singh, a former judicial commissioner and also a senior counsel, who served on the United Nations war crimes tribunal for the Balkans.

Dinesh’s mother is the former Nominated MP and orthopaedic surgeon Dr Kanwaljit Soin and a director of the London-based HelpAge International, a global network helping the disadvantaged elderly.

He has been charged with cocaine consumption. If convicted, he can be jailed up to 10 years or fined S$20,000 or both.

I remember this case. It was the most laughable as he was in possession of cocaine that could have got him hanged. However, after further processing by CNB, it was found that a large portion of the cocaine he has was actually some other powder and the cocaine amounts to just a few grams short for capital punishment.
