SINGAPORE: A new naming convention will take effect for Singapore in major sporting events starting from the Sapporo 2017 Asian Winter Games, said the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) on Saturday (Sep 17).

In a Facebook post, SNOC announced that the Republic's National Olympic Council code will be SGP instead of SIN - in line with the United Nations' International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) official three-letter country code.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved the change and will reflect it on the IOC Website and in future Games, the post stated.

At the 2016 Rio Games, Singapore’s 3-letter country code SIN was used alongside the name of Singaporean athletes in the Olympics on results boards.
