Since being launched in Singapore on August 6, playing Pokemon GO has quickly developed into the national pastime, with scenes of thousands of fans descending on previously quiet streets and parks in the hunt for rare Pokemon becoming a common occurrence. Local businesses throughout the city state have wasted no time in attempting to cash in on the fad, offering a range of promotions and special offers for players. However, one brothel in Singapore’s notorious Geylang District has raised eyebrows after it sought to capitalize on the trend.
The brothel in question, located on Geylang’s infamous Lorong 18, is trying to lure Pokemon GO players by offering discounts based on the number and quality of Pokemon a trainer has captured. For example, any player holding an ‘epic’ Pokemon, including Dratini, Magnemite, Electabuzz, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan or Chansey, can receive a 10% discount on their visit to the brothel.
For trainers who have caught a mythical Pokemon (Lapras, Snorlax or Porygon), the discount goes up to 20%. In a bid to lure international trainers, the brothel is offering trainers who have any of the region-exclusive Pokemon a generous 30% discount. In a bid to also offer discounts to less-fortunate trainers, there’s also a 5% discount available to anyone who has reached level 20.
Thus far the brothel’s owner has been coy about how many Pokemon trainers have actually redeemed a discount since the promotion was launched last week. “We have had a number of Pokemon players visit, particularly those from Team Valor,” he did reveal.
When asked about how the brothel’s employees have reacted to the discounts, he mentioned that a number of the women working there were fans of the game. “We’re considering to redecorate one of our rooms to a Pokemon theme, and have the option of Pokemon cosplay available.”
In other Singapore-related news, a pair of tourists have been photographed riding a scooter without helmets on busy Serangoon Rd. What makes the case more shocking is the fact they were accompanied by an infant child – who was also not wearing any safety gear… guess the nationality
