Both TKD and Karate are better than no form of martial arts training.

If you are serious about learning self-defence, you are better off training in MMA, muay thai, krav maga or bjj.

Any good self-defence training should provide you with a great work out, help you lose weight, build muscle, improve hand-leg coordination, easy to learn and provide ample sparring opportunities.

Most wing chun places in Singapore are crap. They spend too much time learning "forms" that have little application in real combat and very little time learning the practical stuff you need when you encounter a real assailant on the streets.

TKD is a sport, not a martial arts.

Most people are ditching traditional martial arts for practical fighting techniques like MMA, bjj, muay thai and boxing. They don't give you the crap about needing to practice for years before you reach martial arts nirvana or something. You will probably get raped by a nigger or AMDK by then.
