California is on the brink of becoming the first state in the nation to offer illegal immigrants the chance to buy insurance on an ObamaCare exchange -- testing what's being described as a "loophole" in the law.

The Affordable Care Act technically bars illegal immigrants from the insurance exchanges.

But the California bill, which last week passed the state legislature and was sent to Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk, would allow the state to apply for a federal waiver to open its exchange -- Covered California -- to undocumented residents.

Right-wingers are always saying half truths. When you dig deeper, you can see how ignorant those greedy bastards are.

Socialism per se is not bad at all. What's wrong with ensuring that everyone has a basic standard of living. Look at the Scandinavian countries. They practise socialism but that has not stopped people from becoming billionaires.

The problem with right-wing economics (aka supply-side, trickle-down) is that most people will become poor and only a handful become rich. Society will then collapse as the majority, fighting for survival, will go after the rich.

if californians have a choice, they won't want to pay more taxes. taxes already in the pipeline are mostly paid by the upper middle to wealthy classes, those who truly contribute to the overall state and federal economy in a huge way. frauds and freeloaders comprise close to half the state population. they don't pay a single cent to tax.

It's official! California Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill into law.

California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law allowing unauthorized immigrants to buy health insurance on a state exchange created under the U.S. Affordable Care Act, making the state the first in the country to offer that kind of coverage.

The law lets the state request a waiver from the federal government that will be needed to allow unauthorized immigrants to purchase unsubsidized insurance through Covered California, the state's healthcare exchange.

"Today we ask the federal government to remove another barrier to health insurance access that discriminates against some of our residents on the basis of their documentation status," said Senator Ricardo Lara, the bill's author, in a statement.

Brown, a Democrat, signed the bill on Friday, according to the governor's website. His office was not immediately available for comment.

The Los Angeles Times reported that if the waiver is approved, it would allow as many as 390,000 immigrants to purchase healthcare insurance through the state's exchange.

Opponents of the legislation have said it would unnecessarily cost California taxpayers and strain the state's healthcare system.

About 7 percent of California's population, or 2.6 million people, lack legal immigration status. In 2012, the state spent more than $600 million on emergency room and other health-related services for people living in the state illegally.

i think u should look at the percentage of taxes paid on income instead of nominal taxes,and include all the regressive taxes the poor and middle class has to pay.and u will realise the rich pay very very very little taxes.

i agree margaret thatcher's policy is the way to go,keep hoarding all the money and putting it into the state coffers for the enjoyment of the few official elites and spending on white elephants,and raising and raising of government and civil servants pay to stratospheric levels that do not justify their productivity or rate of return on capital at all.in the meantime let the masses starve on the streets,fend for themselves,pick cardboard for exercises,if they cant afford healthcare let them die.its better this way,this way we will never run out of other people's money.
