Chitchat Function 8 - a honeytrap

Some of you might have attended various events organised and hosted by Function 8. However do be careful as it now being used as a honey trap by the authorities to identify and catalogue people who are organising and meeting people who the authorities regard as subversive to Singapore. It has been operation for some years now and visitors and those previously deported and banned have been allowed to return at the invitation of Function 8 and even conduct training previously banned.

To be clear, there are 2 levels of activities taking place and at times these overlap. The first type involves decent and brave folks expressing the displeasure and dissent of oppressive and authoritarian conduct of this Govt. And it also covers abuses of the authority along the way. This is very important for any society let alone a country to advance in the way they treat and value their citizens and being fair in the treatment of all. The second type is the subversive activity and this is the main concern.

As to the genesis of Function 8, the origins are traced to some who were detained during Operation Spectrum. When they were first released, they approached the Singapore Ex-Political Detainees Association whose membership included those were involved in Operations ColdStore and similar operations down the years. The Association however rebuffed them on the basis there the group did not have any clear political ideology and are not true political detainees. In time Function 8 was formed. It now includes others who were even detained during Coldstore and subsequent detentions but these are few. Not all Operation Spectrum detainees are involved in the second type of activities but they do attend he first type of usual activities.

Except for one political party, the rest have avoided Function 8 even though some members do attend the first type of activities. This political party only has 1 individual heavily involved in Function 8.

On honeytraps - these need not be created by the authorities, any congregation that started by others become one if it is convenient. The fact that previously deported and banned individuals were allowed back clearly makes it one. It does serve their purpose to identify the locals who are drawn and inclined towards subversive activities. Of course I would not put it pass these authorities to actually encourage these activities to draw more people in who might have the best of intentions.

Function 8 condemns use of gov’t powers against individual citizens and civil society groups
By The Independent - June 1, 2016 6 1139
Share on Facebook Tweet on Twitter

The following is a press release by Function 8.

Function 8 deplores the intimidation of Roy Ngerng and Teo Soh Lung and the unnecessary seizure of their mobile phones and computers. This follows their interviews with the police pertaining to an investigation into facebook postings on cooling off day on 6 May 2016 at the Police Cantonment Complex. The police have clearly abused their power of investigation even though both Roy and Soh Lung had never denied, and indeed confirmed at the interview, that they had commented on, and shared postings on Facebook which had been made by others.

Function 8 deeply regrets the actions of the police in this unnecessary seizure which is an invasion of privacy and an act of intimidation against Roy and Soh Lung. In our view, it is part of a chain of recent incidents that encroach upon work of civil society which contribute to the legitimate exercise of good citizenship.

We, at Function 8, condemns the use of governmental powers against sincere individual citizens and civil society groups that are striving to make our nation a more inclusive, and a more caring one, accountable for the welfare of our fellow human beings. This is truly an act of legal opportunism.

There are very few people that are confident of themselves and know what is national interest and security and what is not. One such person is Prof Kevin Tan the constitutional expert. He gave an excellent presentation on Cause lawyering organised by Function 8. The rest struggle.

But I am heartened by the fact that most opposition identities are aware.

Your thread reminds me of this post.

http://www.sammyboy.com/showthread....-an-Island-quot-A-banned-book-on-Lee-Kuan-Yew

No prizes for guessing which political party is involved here. (The answer is contained in the above thread)

Even idiots like Eric Tan and Goh Meng Seng know to stay clear of F8 which is operates behind the scenes in such instances.

You see the latest diatribe she wrote about the arrest of Teo Soh Lung and Roy Ngerng. This ones clearly tells me she knows he difference between local protocol for Police investigation and what in the US for instance and was clearly playing to foreign interest.

I have no doubt that when Shanmugam passed that message to Remy, she was the intended audience.

And I would expect no less of them. It also helps a great deal if you are not held hostage by the liberal left (Kirsten, et al).

I have no doubt .............

Nobody gives a shit what the local protocol is except where it deviates from internationally accepted standards. The fact that the Sinkie polis say and it is repeated by the Shit Times, Mediacock, etc that the sun rises from the east doesn't make it so.

The cold hard fact is that Sinkieland is not a signatory of the United Nations International Convention on Civil and Political Rights, which has been signed and ratified by 168 countries. Only 22 countries have not signed, which puts Sinkieland in the "good" company of Malaysia, Myanmar, Saudi Arabia, Brunei, South Sudan, Qatar, etc. Even PRC has signed but not ratified, showing an intention to live up to international standards when the time is right. For PAP, the time will never be right because either Sinkies are too stupid or Lightning is too power hungry.

Just look at the map on this wikipedia article - the entire world is green, and the only large parts that are grey are Saudi Arabia, Myanmar, Malaysia & Singapore. And what the fuck did that overpaid shortie Tommy Cock do to rectify the situation when he was Sinkie ambassador to the UN for umpteen years. All useless pieces of shit who can be easily bought with a few pieces of silver.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Covenant_on_Civil_and_Political_Rights

I have no doubt that you're got a Sinkie mindset.

Roy Ngerng is the latest honeypot.

He still has no idea why he was targetted and keep talking about that bowl of oats his mother lovingly made for him.

Where is HHH when you need her around?

Yes. Its interesting that WP statement suggest that they know what is going on. Teo as well . Its certainly a black ops to search their contact list.

Scroobal - you expressed similar concerns back in 2012: ( http://www.sammyboy.com/showthread.php?136310-Plea-to-Function-8 ) which sparked an interesting discussion. True enough VW is no more and SDP...well

The narrative from 1987 continues to cast a long shadow over opposition-minded individuals and because they largely remain in the dark about the multi-layers of what was being played out, they continue to slip and skid. They continue to call out for the injustice of almost 30 years ago as they perceive it, yet they are nowhere close to what actually was the game and the list of new gambits has not been exhausted. I remember it was mentioned that even the stalwarts of the inner circle of cabinet do not really know what was actually happening, let alone about any dead-drops. Only a very few have ever had that clearance. So as long as the incident remains a source of speculation, it serves the long game. TSL is still none the wiser and then you have professionals like Jeanette trying to take potshots at the police based on fantastical notions of procedure. Truly shocking and embarrassing in 2016. Its as if they can know everything yet have learnt absolutely nothing. Every showing of a counter-narrative film (like To Singapore With Love and Untracing the Conspiracy) feeds those on the fringes especially when the authorities still move to "ban" these - perhaps symbolically the paternalism scores some points but the digital makes almost everything available at your fingertips.

The probability of "minor" ops seems to also be at play but packaged very differently - the dedicated believers will play to their various audiences whether local regional or Western and again it serves both but probably much more beneficial to the State. Even though it may seem a stretch of the imagination and almost fantastical, our state interests are paramount and there are enough legitimate businesses and appointed businessmen littered around to mitigate against any potential provocateurs.

The sideshows are here to stay. The puppet masters and puppets will continue in their respective roles but the underlying purpose probably has shifted quite dramatically since 1987. The end-game though is a cause of concern especially when the lower-paid are now struggling and self-immolation is not beyond the desperate. It takes one spark and that is the greater menace. Regardless of the differences between the CMIOs, the fragility of the inter-communal peace remains very delicate and with growing obvious threats imposed on the region by deviant religious ideologies, the brew is still being stirred.

Trust me, it's not difficult to convert ex-detainees. Everyman has his $. Not everyone is in the same league as CTP. Manage their ego and emphasise it is executed in the name of national security and interests and that their assistance is not that of an informer or no 7 but as an undercover agent for s'pore not PAP.

VW was expendable to the puppet masters. Even people like Alex Au, PT and Braema Mathi etc are all expendable. They can get fresh and gullible ones. Jeanette and TOC seem to be the next bunch of suckers. Sadly both Teo and Wong SY are still clueless or have gone into denial. When 9 of the 22 detainees released a statement saying that they were tortured and 8 were re-arrested and detained again (1 was in the UK and could not be arrested), the government finally released a more detailed involvement of the main 6 individuals and the links to CPM. Prior to this the narrative was the penetration of Church hogwash not to show the CPM and its sympathisers that its dept of knowledge and who broke down. By this stage these 2 should have realised what was going. The key player did not sign the statement of torture, broke away from the group and went into business with her father and became very successful.

One of them Ng Bee Leng, a poly student realised what was going on, started a fresh, went to University, and I understand in one of the Ministry fully immersed in social work and good for her.

Now they have now branched into Malaysia and even hooked up into Bersih and playing with fire. The Malaysian Special Branch is another effective intelligence agency that is sharp. Sooner or later they are going to clamp down on the Singapore trouble makers.

A "neat" overview of the role of the Church in that period especially - note the characterisation as "pragmatic" in the title - useful for cross-references to source material that have been discussed on this thread and elsewhere in the forum and I am not suggesting that this is in anyway a penetrating expose nor aspiring to be a counter-narrative as the chap who researched this states that "the Catholic Church in Singapore, an organization and community whose history has been sorely neglected. As a Catholic myself, I feel it is only appropriate that I strive rectify this situation to the best of my ability. As such my thesis topic naturally revolves the Church's local history."

"THE ROMAN CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESE OF SINGAPORE 1972-2001: AN EXAMINATION OF ITS PRAGMATIC INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT"

http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/bitstream/handle/10635/118586/OwCKD.pdf?sequence=1

As has been observed, it is unfortunate that those that got burnt and played remain easily provoked into acting out, even after almost 30 years. No redemption for these scared souls.

With regard to the expendables, just like bees:

Statement signed by 140 individuals to call upon the authorities to ensure the immediate return of all confiscated property to Teo Soh Lung and Roy Ngerng who are currently being investigated for alleged violation of the Parliamentary Election Act, as it is wholly inappropriate for police investigations of such an intimidating and intrusive nature to take place. The statement also calls for the removal of any data obtained from the two individuals from state and police possession; the immediate and total cessation of the investigative process on the two individuals.
The full statement as below.

We, the undersigned are gravely concerned by the ongoing police investigations into alleged breaches by Roy Ngerng and Teo Soh Lung of the Cooling Off Day rules.

We are disquieted by the seizure of their property from their homes, in particular without warrant, and the wholesale and indiscriminate archiving of broad swathes of their personal data. These excessive and intimidating measures are completely disproportionate to any harm alleged to have been caused by the actions of Ngerng and Teo.

To openly express a political view – including and especially views on party politics – is the fundamental right of every member of society. If we are to achieve a democratic society where legislators and the government are truly representative of the values and wishes of citizens, every individual must be free to fearlessly express their views of politicians, parties and electoral processes.

For an individual seeking to understand the Cooling Off Day regulations, the application of the prohibitions on individual conduct is not clear. Someone relying on the wording on the Elections Department website, which indicates an exemption for “the transmission of personal political views by individuals to other individuals, on a non-commercial basis, using the Internet, telephone or electronic means”, might reasonably conclude that their posts were exempt.

Given this ambiguity and the great importance of freedom of expression for individual citizens, it is wholly inappropriate for police investigations of such an intimidating and intrusive nature to take place. The main effect of this police action is to intensify a climate of fear that deters the frank discussion of political issues by all individuals – a discussion that our society both needs and deserves.

We note that there have been previous allegations of breaches of the Cooling Off Day rules by electoral candidates. Such conduct is far more likely to cause the harm to the electoral process which Cooling Off Day is designed to avert. Yet we are not aware of such draconian investigations made in those circumstances. A society which values the free exchange of political ideas must not apply more restrictive standards to ordinary citizens than to electoral candidates.

We call upon the state to ensure the immediate return of all confiscated property to Ngerng and Teo, the removal of any data obtained from them from state and police possession, and an immediate and total cessation of the investigative process.

Tay Kheng soon? Brother of the late Tay eng soon. Interesting.

If one wants to be cynical:

Tay was active in church work while studying at ACS. He was a district steward of the Methodist church on Barker Road and assistant superintendent of its Sunday school. The church, now known as Barker Road Methodist Church (BRMC), had its beginnings in 1956 as a regular Sunday gathering of a group of ACS students; in that same year, Tay built the church with some schoolmates. To save cost, he enlisted the help of his brother, Tay Kheng Soon, who was then an unqualified architect, and the church was constructed with wood at a cost of $70,000. Tay continued to be active in the BRMC throughout his life.

Some people here talk big like they understand the plot and split hairs as if they were Gods. The fact is these people are like Dowager Cixi. The endgame is clear. Flee they will and left in shambles this place will be. These dogs are not to be concerned with. In today's global world, an enclave of foreigner workers can serve as an effective terrorist army that can decimate the myth of Gurkhas or commandos overnight. Khukuris, martial arts and grunts of power are but fairytales of yesteryear. Keep acting smart. Endgame is near.

Note the very first sentence of this statement/petition which shows the clear work of the hidden hands and gives the game way. Why the - "immediate return of all confiscated property to Teo Soh Lung and Roy Ngerng" as the opening line. Why not start with challenging the authorities for investigating Teo and Roy on a law that is so unclear and unfair. I can more or less guess that the person who drafted this did not sign the statement.

They know that Teo's and Roy's devices have a treasure trove of all those involved, the messages sent and received and more importantly the motives and intentions behind the messages. It will also throw out who have been playing both sides which is very common in politics. It also shows how desperate they have become when these devices were seized. As the days go by Teo Soh Lung is beginning to resemble Dr Lee Siew Choh who was famously used by both sides to the very end. Even today's Poh Soo Kai in his book is bitter about Lieu Siew Choh. The Plen was also bitter and the whole left movement including Barisan Socialis MPs are bitter about Lee Siew Choh. The question is why did they appoint him in the first place.

Anyway looking at the names, I would catalogue them in 3 categories and some would straddle between 2 categories.

The first are those that are clear on what the principles and premises are and know where to draw the line. In this lot I would include Siew Kum Hong and Tay Kheng Soon. The authorities know they are life long thorns but they do so for the interest of he country and not the PAP. And their track record shows that clearly. The lesser known ones include Matilda Gaberialpillai and Arffin Sha

The second lot are those that used by others in an organised or a semi organised manner and there is a clear history and track record of doing it. These are the patsies of our time. Their involvement range from minor to major. Teo, Wong SY, Yap Hon Ngian, Chew Keng Chuan, Lynn Lee, Terry Xu and Low Yit Leng. Some in this category do it our peer pressure or obliged due to links in the past basically too nice even though they know to know what is going on.

Sadly in the second lot I am including Ananth Thambyah (aka Prof Paul Thamyah) and Dr Thum Ping Tjin. Recent revelations are sad but that's life.

In the third lot are the rest who are basically genuine decent citizens who are not shy to shout at authoritarianism and oppression. They do at times don rose tinted glasses and do follow the crowd and in this instance did not query why the petition is written in this manner. So you have the husband and wife team of Neo Swee Lin and hubby, Ivan Heng, Jolovan Wham, M Ravi etc. I always regarded Alfian Saat as a smart cookie and he would straddle between 1st and the 3rd lot.

By the way petitions and statements such as these are always welcome by the Intelligence agencies as it helps identify who is involved and when the numbers are big it is easier to work out the co-realtionships.

Tay Kheng Soon was very bitter when Teh Cheang Wan was charged in court for corruption. He knew Teh form the early years and knew that he was receiving kick-backs well before he became a senior in HDB. He was angry because it was well known in the building trade and nothing was done.

You can always rely on Tay for straight forward answers. Interestingly he ended up with 2 PAP fans in his family. His brother and later his wife, now ex-wife. Though to his credit he married her when she was a critic of Old Man and called him a demigod in print Then again nobody expected Chan Heng Chee to swing around 180 degrees.

Yes, thus the honeytrap. I have no doubt and it is running for a long while. When they allowed James Minchin and Ron Fujiyoshi to run talks and workshops in Function 8 when they were previously banned, I knew that the State was involved. I am pretty certain that it is now a joint operation with Special Branch as these idiots went and pulled in Ambiga Sreenevasan of Besih. She I am sure can look after herself but they are pulling the tiger tail with this.

I actually warned these guys in 2012 in SBF. Now I understand the main lot are working from KL with the usual main players in the safety of Europe.

Manage their ego and emphasise it is executed in the name of national security and interests and that their assistance is not that of an informer or no 7 but as an undercover agent for s'pore not PAP.
