There were 14 major breakdowns on the MRT network last year - an increase of 40 per cent from the previous year, the Land Transport Authority announced on its website yesterday.

Meanwhile, the number of such breakdowns, each lasting more than 30 minutes, on the LRT system nearly quadrupled to 15.

Was told recently that even some military scholars who have been roped in at SMRT have shuddered at how messed up things are within the organisation - anybody who has had to work across Ministries and Stat Boards will attest how fragmented these are when it comes to co-ordinate as one effort simply because everyone is protective of their turf, and if they have to give face they will want maximum acknowledgment and always covers backside - now imagine all of these types under one roof - and the clear issue is leadership and the entourage around the management.

Sub-par 3rd world engineers hired en masse previously have also led to more problems being hidden especially those sourced from countries that are degree mills and typically swimming underwater each time there's a flood.

The other contributing factor is Desmond. Actually I was told that the major factor holding SMRT back now is Desmond and his management style. Like all managers they hire those that they believe not only they can work without are just like them. It would be quite ironic if despite all the attempts of the Opposition to gain a greater presence in Parliamenf ultimately it is the humble MRT that destroys the hegemony of the MIW.

Mind you despite all that has happened Desmond still okayed bringing in retired consultants from London Underground - daily breakdowns are an accepted reality of transportation in London - how is the consultant is adding value when he has no experience dealing with Singkies and their expectations? Would it not make more sense to have the ones that actually built the infrastructure be brought in as consultants?

MRT service disrupted for 2nd time in 12 hours

SINGAPORE: Train service on the North-South Line (NSL) was disrupted for about half an hour on Tuesday (Apr 26), less than 12 hours after four train lines were affected by a power trip in another incident. This was also the third disruption on the NSL in less than a week.

On Tuesday morning, a "traction power fault" stopped train service between Kranji and Woodlands MRT stations on the NSL.

On Monday, a larger number of stations on the NSL - from Jurong East to Kranji - were affected. Train services on the East-West, Circle and Bukit Panjang LRT Lines were also disrupted, the first time that trains on all of these lines were affected at the same time, transport operator SMRT said. It added that the power trip was traced to a "power dip" at the Buona Vista power intake station.

Singapore's MRT system has experienced a number of breakdowns since Apr 21, when there was no train service from Marina South Pier to Newton stations. Later in the day, the North-East Line was also hit by a train disruption. Train services were unavailable between Chinatown and Farrer Park stations in both directions.

This was after Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan announced in a blog post that the NSL had passed the 100-day major incident-free milestone.

Those affected in Monday's power trip incident can collect fare refunds within the next 14 days from passenger service counters at any SMRT train station, said SMRT.

Third North-South Line breakdown in less than a week disrupts train service from Woodlands to Kranji on Tuesday morning

SINGAPORE - South-bound train service on the North-South Line (NSL) was crippled for close to half an hour early Tuesday (April 26) morning - the third time in less than a week that Singapore's oldest MRT line has suffered a disruption.

NSL operator SMRT said in a tweet at 6.31am that there was no service from Woodlands to Kranji stations, and advised commuters to seek alternative transport.

It said in a subsequent tweet that the breakdown was due to a traction power fault, while free public and shuttle buses were activated at affected stations.

Tuesday morning's disruption comes less than 12 hours after a power dip caused an unprecedented breakdown of train services along three MRT lines and one LRT line, as the journeys of thousands of commuters were affected towards the end of the evening peak hour.

Along the NSL, stations from Jurong East to Kranji were hit.

Last Thursday, a stalled engineering train at Raffles Place station knocked out a stretch of the line from Marine South Pier to Newton for almost an hour.

every time i ride the mrt, it works smoothly and perfectly. i've always wanted to experience a breakdown but unfortunately it doesn't cooperate. breakdowns should be an enjoyable and enriching experience. if there is no breakdown i worry.

my scout told me that they had already started to overhaul the train systems since last year, replacing all the old train systems(signal, power, track...etc) in a very tight schedule. the truth about GLCs like ST and SMRT, they are lead by mechanical cows. not much thinking involved, just need to spend ah gong's money to buy and replace, overhaul everything, that's their best solution. any sinkie like tom, dick and harry, with common sense also can come out with it.

Desmond initially brought in 6 SAF personnel and 1 Head of Corporate Communication from Oglivy and 1 Engineering Executive from Kowloon Canton railway. Since then it has been a merry go around. The Girl from Oglivy left within a year and basically indicated dysfunctional organisation for leaving. He replaced her with his Head of Physical Security whose brother happens to be the Editor of the New Paper. The security head was also from SAF and no background in media or communications. So presumably he can get his brother to give advice on media releases and nice coverage. The Hong Kong guy I understand is no longer holding the post.

There is also a internal war between LTA and SMRT who own the infrastructure and responsible for upgrade. So the finger pointing is a constant. The long standing Chairman who as there when Saw ran the show is still there and he was the former PS for Defence.

I don' think there is any successful large scale non-military business that is run by ex military personnel anywhere in the World.

what you described as happening at SMRT is happening across the board in all GLCs and Stat boards. because SMRT is so visible, any fuckup is public knowledge. Others have as many or more fuckups then SMRT but you don't hear it until they are in very deep trouble like NOL.
