One of the biggest reason Hong Kong being like 100x more better than Singapore is because is far more recognizable. Is funny how this happens everytime.. almost every non-Chinese person ( aside from Malaysia ) don't know where Singapore is located at or worst don't even know what Singaporeans are. Yesterday, I've met a lot of friends (from my other friends ) who asked me where I'm from, I told them " I'm from Hong Kong and Singapore ", most of the time they know where Hong Kong is but almost none of them have a clue a about Singapore. What surprised me even more that even the British people don't know where or what is Singapore and even many Mainland Chinese living in the U.K have no idea about Singapore.

So I was thinking why is this?????

- Both were once colony of British.
- Both share similar backgrounds, 98-99% of their population came from their ancestors and grandparents who migrated several years after British colonized it 1800's
- Both are like a city state country with a small peanut size
- Both have roughly the same population
- Both share a culture of eastern and western mix
- Both came from Southern China
- Both are a 1st world and ranking in top 10 GDP per capita.
- Both were occupied by Japan for few years and returned to British rule stricly after
- Both are not the original inhabitants of the islands
- Both were invited by the British

Yet why is Hong Kong are like 100x more international known ?

hong kong should be called hong kang instead. it's a place kena constantly fucked by every presiding power from qing to british to jap to commie.

Cultural influence

Aside from China and Japan with it's super power economy and massive population.
Asian Tiger economies also include: South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore.

But why is it among the 4 Asian tigers only Singapore is unknown to the world ? It must absolutely the lack of cultural influence and international/famous people.
Koreans have it's K-pop, Samsung, K-drama. Taiwan have it's Taiwanese dramas and pop culture, Hong Kong once dominated Asia and even influencing the west in movies. Singapore never had any cultural export Look at Hong Kong. It's Hong Kong Cantonese movies are wll known in Asia and in the west. Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan is famous all over the world. What does Singapore have? you cannot even name one famous person or worst there is barely any news coming out from Singapore.

Couple Of Points:

1. HK is not 100X more internationally known. That is just your (wrong) impression. ;)

2. If you want some bitchy gossip and commentary on both Singapore and Hong Kong, you can ask the Forum Resident Tua Pau Xian who shuttles between both places. :D

There was no Hong Kong during Qing.

Before British colonization, Hong Kong was not even Hong Kong. Hong Kong is just different islands pieced together by British.
Hong Kong were inhabited by indegenious inhabitants like Tanka (aboriginal non-Han sea gypsies) and other like Hoklo, Hakka, Waitou people, they represent only 1-2% of Hong Kong's population.

98% of modern Hong Kong and Singaporeans today are not natives.

Singapore was a Malaysian land ruled by Malays for 3000 years after it was fucked by the British, Japs and later by Lee Kuan Yew

The original inhabitants were Negrito

hk was part of xin'an county under ming, then qing. it was also a pirate's hangout during ming.

"The last dynasty in China, the Qing, was also the last to come into contact with Hong Kong. Before Hong Kong was colonized by the British, Hong Kong remained under the governance of Xin'an County. As a military outpost and trading port, Hong Kong's territory later gained the attention of the world. After the Great Clearance policy, ordered by the Qing Kangxi Emperor, many Hakka people migrated from inland China to Xin'an County, which included modern Hong Kong." -wiki.

Singapore is inferior to Hong Kong.

Ther was no Hong Kong in the past. Without the British there be no such thing as Hong Kong. In fact Hong Kong refers only to the Hong Kong island in the past which is today only 8% of Hong Kongs territory today which is not the same as the Hong Kong that wikipedia mentions today. Today's Hong Kong definition is differention to the past.

1842 British colonized Hong Kong island
1850's British colonized Kowloon
1898 British colonized Lauta island and New territories ( making up 86% of Hong Kong land )

Hong Kong and Singapore share one similar thing. Both were fucked by the British and Japs (or better said both migrated to the colony to get fucked ). The only difference today is that Hong Kong is in partial control of China communist while Singapore is independent live under tyrants.

Hong Kong was part of China for 2000 years
Singapore was part of Malaysia for 3000 years
