Transport Minister mislead Singaporeans about rail reliability

Calling the 100-day major disruption-free on the North South Line (NSL) a “success”, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan mischievously misled Singaporeans about the reliability of Singapore’s public railway system.

Minister Khaw cherry-picked the NSL and left out the recent damning report by the Land Transport Authority, which highlighted an increase in train breakdowns. In 2015, there was a total of 14 major MRT train breakdowns, 40% more than 2014’s 10 incidents. For the LRT trains, the number of breakdowns exceeding thirty minutes increased 4-fold to 15 in 2015. The most problematic train system is the Bukit Panjang LRT line, which saw 10 breakdowns in 2015. In summary, there is a train breakdown nearly every 2 weeks in Singapore.

The Malaysia-born Singapore Minister who has never served National Service gave himself a pat on his own shoulder and wax lyrical about success and it being “a game of snakes and ladders”:

“But today’s success does not mean continued success. Any lapse, and we are back to square one, much like a game of snakes and ladders, and the clock is reset.”

The S$1.1 million Transport Minister is also trying to push the blame of train breakdown to railway maintenance staffs by refusing to apologise or comment on issues whenever there is a train breakdown. nope, the wet condition degrades lubricants, deposits minerals and calcites on insulators, and causes corrosion to metallic surfaces. it's environmentally challenging to run transit operations in tropical cuntries, let alone equatorial ones.

Another Milestone today...NEL towards Harbourfront down since this morning ( 6am?).....bus Captains complaining like shit..going off shifts have to do OT...good for them, have OT....doing National Service for Singapore..our CORE workers... three cheers for them...

You have to give credit to them, they did project the growth of the mass rapid transport when it was built & started in the 1980's....but they didn't factor in..."mee siam mai hum" , OPEN DOOR policy or three countries, one NATION..or was it 4, when you include the "motherlands" ( India included).....the human traffic, is much higher than the projection of early days, that is for sure...& NS/EW Lines....are just 'coping' with the increased & the newer line like NEL....just ok, plus now the circle lines, DT Line...feeding into the grid...

we thank divine providence for protecting the daily commuters that use the mass rapid train lines....say thank god..( PAP god)...ha ha ha ha
