SINGAPORE: Two of the five MRT lines in Singapore have achieved 100 days clear of major incidents, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan said on Tuesday (Apr 19).
In a blog post, Mr Khaw announced that the North-South Line passed the 100-day major incident-free milestone on Monday, while the Downtown Line (DTL) has achieved 178 days without disruption.
“For us in the rail industry, clearing 100 disruption-free days is no mean feat,” he said. “It requires everyone to do everything right. Any misstep can cause a disruption.”
Mr Khaw added that for the NSL to pass its 100-day mark is “especially inspiring” as it is the oldest line in Singapore. “Its success gives us confidence that with hard work and strong determination, we will improve our rail reliability,” he said.
Mr Khaw said the challenge to stabilise the existing MRT system and make it more reliable is “especially daunting”, as rail capacity is also expanding in Singapore.
“Many of these engineering tasks have to be carried out during the three to four engineering hours per day,” Mr Khaw said. “But our colleagues on the ground are undaunted. They are pressing on and putting in their best efforts, all thanks to the continued support of commuters and residents during the early closure of the North-South and East-West Lines.”
Mr Khaw's announcement comes as LTA said it is working with to replace the existing voltage protection system on the MRT network to prevent a repeat of the 3.5-hour disruption on the North-South and East-West Lines last July.
The East-West Line saw a major disruption last month, after two maintenance trainee staff were hit by an oncoming train and killed.
