Time to get our 'outsider' into the 'establishment'. May he shake things up? I think it'll be good to give the system a good shake !

Based on the last election, SDP seems to have a very good campaign team - the work of some foreign professionals, I would venture to guess. During the last election, SDP limited resources were spread over a few constituencies in which they contested. However, with a one-to-one By Election, I expect to see the SDP campaign team displaying their fireworks in Bukit Batok in full glory.

It's almost an impossible task to muster a 20% swing in the votes, but I hope to be proven wrong.

I am sure that CSJ will have the guts and wherewithal to take on the PAP machine. The thing is to get through the electoral process with a WIN. That is the diffcult part. I hope he gets in and give the PAP a thorny time. WP has been too quiet.

70% thought their choice would make the recession disappear....now we know what's what.

It will be interesting to see what promises are made in this campaign.

In fact in a crisis, voters will likely vote PAP as they are known to turn things around quicker. Voters actually turn to the opposition in better times as in 1991, 2011 etc. It also explains why the By Elections strategy works.

There is another aspect that is cause for concern. The PAP controls every aspect of society that has an influence on political outcomes. Their control is tighter than ever. During old man's era, he would proudly say that he needs to control the press, the unions and even Law Society. He was actually more transparent. The son however is not so articulate so finds it hard to defend his position so does his control very quietly. When a crisis occurs in the past, old man will come out fighting. Look at LHL, at every crisis he will hide out. The wife controls the economy and unlike the likes of Pillai and the other first generations PS, it is her interest to ensure politically they are exploited.

Except for the usual hardcore 30% opposition supporters, the default position for 70% of the voters is the PAP.

In 2015, it was a combination of 2 factors, PAP worked to cover its weak flanks. They fixed a number of things and PMO created a full media team to manage the press and political comms. WP also created a sense of disillusionment for the opposition with their Town Council debacle which the press focussed heavily on.

The only way that Opposition can strengthen its hand is to work harder on the media front. WP use of the internet is appalling and they have so many MPs who I am sure receive numerous complaints about this government. Sometimes I think they suffer from siege mentality - scared to look over the parapet.

One important factor to note is that where the opposition offered a decent fight, the the PAP vote % was much lower. Quality of candidates is key. If we continue to have Desmond Lim and KJ and a bunch of elderly retirees representing Wall's Ice cream and the press focusses on them, the voters will begin to see the opposition in a different light. Would you ever contemplate voting for these folks? So who would you vote for?

The 70% is hopeless and beyond redemption. We need a deep economic crisis to wake them up.

The only way to beat the PAP is to get good capable people who's willing to put in 200% and work for the good of the people. Simple. No two way about it.

Except for the usual hardcore 30% opposition supporters, the default position for 70% of the voters is the PAP.

Of that 70%, only half are hardcore PAP voters while the other half are apathetic voters, or as the TV pundits call them "swing voters".

What WP and LTK has been successful in doing is to market themselves to the apathetic voters and a build a good reputation. WP does it through the quality and character of their candidates like LTK, Sylvia, CSM, Pritam etc, party branding, and years of hard work on the ground connecting with apathetic voters.

SDP has good candidates like Dr Tambyah and Dr Chee, but they should emulate WP's model to work hard on the ground and connect with the apathetic voters which is one-third of the electorate.

Though internet and social media are useful, fast and cheap tools for the opposition to spread their message, but hard work on the ground connecting with apathetic voters and building reputation are vital. A good example is last year's GE, SDP uses the internet and social media as much as WP, but WP produces better election results.

Totally agree with you that the quality of the opposition candidates is the key to success. Guys like Desmond Lim are giving the opposition a bad reputation and should be removed from politics immediately.

Its interesting development. Old man's entire notion of having a GRC was predicated on that fact that no minority candidate can be elected on their own after HDB began the race quota programme. And we ended with rubbish PAP candidates of not only minority but of Chinese stock that got into parliament on the backs of strong candidates. In 2011, they tested the waters with a well credentialed candidate who had some Chinese blood, married to a Chinese but had been an MP in the form of Micheal Palmer. He won by 54% but a total unknown an newbie by the name of Lee LiLian got 41%. Quite close.

With Murali, that are a number of factors to be looked at. Not a drop of Chinese blood. Married to an Indian, no previous experience as an MP and standing in a single ward. The fact that he will win is a foregone conclusion but it also then undermines the undermines the entire concept of GRC except that it helps useless PAP candidates.

It is interesting that Paul Thambyah in a recent speech endorsed Tan Jee Say and Tan Kin Lian as worthy Presidential candidates but did not mention Tan Cheng Bock. Interestingly SDP members attended TCB's recent open house and happily took pictures. Plus what you mentioned it will be interesting.

Dr Thambyah awfully quiet. Didn't see him in the picture when Dr Chee announced he'll run. Any conflict there ??

good points. i am not ruling out tharman or even pinky saying murali will be more than an mp if elected. murali is on very good terms with shan and MOS posting at MHA cannot be ruled out.

pity the chinese branch sec at bb. he should have been the one running. till now, murali is the more likely chap.

My sense is that WP's hard work on the ground is discounted if people are not aware. They should be shouting about their handwork from the proverbial rooftops to get the uplift. They can learn from the SDP in this regard. Furthermore the campaign of demonising WP is getting worse with the media.

Why would any sinkie go through 200% of pain, sacrifice and hard work for the "good of the people" when the people you refer to are a bunch of retards?
