Antibiotics in fast food meat sources: CAP calls for end to antibiotic use in animal feed
GEORGE TOWN: The Consumers Association of Penang has called for a ban on antibiotics use in animal feed.
CAP also urged consumers to stop patronising fast food chains that were not phasing out the use of meats from antibiotic-fed farm animals.
This is in light of the European Union's ban on antibiotics in animal feed.
CAP president S.M. Mohamed Idris said there was sufficient evidence to show that antibiotic-resistant bacteria was present in the many food products sold in Malaysia.
He said in 2012, the Department of Veterinary Services found that half of domestic chickens tested were found to be resistant to three types of antibiotics.
"Antibiotic resistance is one of the most serious health threats Malaysia faces.
"Left unchecked, antibiotic resistance will kill 10 million a year in 2050. It is expected to kill 4.73 million in Asia alone.
"In view of the catastrophic antibiotic resistance crisis, CAP urges the Health and the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministries to ban antibiotics use in animal feed," he told reporters here today.
Idris also called on the ministries to create a national system to monitor antibiotic use and abuse in food animals.
He also urged the authorities to educate and train livestock farmers on the responsible use of antibiotics.
