There were certain things that Wooden and most sinkies took for granted. From the 1980s onwards, I never considered Singapore '3rd world' even though we insisted on keeping this label for the next few decades for preferential trade status. As I travelled around the region and the world, it was clear that even in the 1980s, places like Singapore and HK were on their way to First World status.

We were already on par with Europe in our foundations towards a modern and safe society, with the income level to narrow in the subsequent decades.
