I'm past that stage in life where announcements of new automobile models/releases stir any excitement. Don't care about go-fast cars, rocket acceleration and all that crap. A car today is just a car. Hopefully it is reliable, doesn't cost an arm and a leg to operate, easy to maintain, and in today's world, has a smaller carbon footprint. Well, actually one car does catch my attention - the Toyota Prius. It caught my attention after Al Gore's son was given a speeding ticket for driving in a Prius! So, it can go fast as well, maybe not as fast as Bugatti Veyron, but fast enough to get a speeding ticket! And how mush faster do I need to drive? And among all the road-going mass produced cars, it has the smallest carbon footprint. Not as small as the electric Nissan Leaf, but it at least doesn't need the long recharge time faced by battery operated autos. It seats four adults comfortably, able to load a full week's groceries in the trunk. And being used by taxi companies worldwide, it must be dependable, well, made by Toyota, it has to be. If only they'd throw a hybrid engine into a Corolla, that would make it even more appealing, but as it is, it already is. With COE prices going down, might consider it as my next wheels!

2016 Toyota Prius: The Hybrid Leader That Defies Expectations

The all-new 2016 Toyota Prius will be available in 5 different varieties to suit individual needs, while still offering Toyota’s superior hybrid efficiency.
One year short of its 20th birthday — the Toyota Prius has become a vehicle synonymous with the term “Hybrid.” The Japanese automaker made history in 1997 when the Prius became the very first mass-produced hybrid vehicle on the market. At the start of the new millennium the Prius was launched globally, and has sold over 3.5 million units since. Toyota’s progressive vision and innovative engineering sparked a trend that would be imitated, but seldom duplicated in the years that followed. And while hybrid technology has expanded immensely in the nearly two decades since the advent of the first Prius, Toyota continues to thrive as an industry leader in both production and sales. The all-new 2016 Toyota Prius will be available in 5 different varieties to suit individual needs, while still offering Toyota’s superior hybrid efficiency. The base Prius is a hybrid option great for those on a budget, while the Prius Upgrade Package includes heated seats and Toyota Safety Sense. The Prius Technology offers all of the above but adds a power moonroof , wireless charging and an upgraded 7” display. The Technology trim offers an Advanced package that includes safety technology such as Toyota’s blind spot monitor and Intelligent Parking Assist. Finally a Prius Touring model adds a sportier look with upgraded 17” Aluminum Alloy Wheels and Fog Lamps; while offering Softex seating surfaces, Navigation with Voice recognition and more. RELATED: Toyota Safety Sense A brave new look has the fourth-generation Prius looking better than ever, while boasting a more sleek design without compromising driver visibility. The redesigned exterior is the first noticeable change, as the “Triangle Silhouette” of models past has been rounded out for a modern and sporty look.
All members of the fourth generation Prius family have been stylishly redesigned using Toyota’s New Global Architecture platform (TNGA), featuring a new high-strength body frame and double wishbone independent rear suspension for an exceptionally smooth ride and improved vehicle handling. The redesigned Prius is also slightly longer, wider, and lower then its predecessor — 2.4” longer, 0.6” wider, 0.8” lower — offering more interior space for passengers and cargo. The lower stance creates a more aerodynamic effect, cutting down on wind resistance while conserving fuel.
Standard on all new Prius models are Bi-LED headlamps, which automatically focuses light on the road and helps guide you through low visibility without blinding oncoming motorists.
Of course Toyota leaves no stone unturned —The 17-inch rims on the Touring edition are 1.5 lbs lighter, aerodynamic wheel covers cut down on wind resistance, while low rolling resistance tires offer superior grip.
The average fuel economy for the 2016 Prius is 4.5L/100km (combined city and highway) making this fourth generation Prius the most fuel efficient hybrid available — and you don’t even have to worry about a plug! A new lithium-ion battery is available on the Technology and Touring models. This new and improved battery is smaller and conveniently fits beneath the back seats, opening up more cargo space.
The revamped 1.8-litre gas engine produces 40 percent less thermal heat than before thanks to improvements that reduce the amount of friction from the rotating assembly and improved fuel combustion technology. The exhaust heat recirculation system harnesses the heat created by exhaust gases to expedite engine coolant warm-up, which allows the hybrid system to switch from gas to battery power sooner and more often. This feature is especially useful for city driving or when gasoline power is not required — making the 2016 Prius a welcomed breath of fresh air.
This nifty hybrid has also been masterfully engineered to be the quietest Prius to date — so much in fact that a small speaker has been installed to alert pedestrians and cyclists when the vehicle travels less than 20km/h. You know you have a quiet vehicle when you have to make artificial noise to let everyone know you’re rounding the corner!
Brakes that help save fuel — yes, you read that correctly! The regenerative brake system harnesses kinetic energy from the breaking wheel — similar to a friction powered bicycle light — and stores the electrical power in the hybrid battery for later use.
Available on the 2016 Prius is Toyota Safety Sense P, which bundles an assortment of advanced features from Toyota’s Safety Sense technology. This safety system is unique to Toyota and includes pre-collision systems such as pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, full-speed dynamic radar cruise control, automatic high beams and automatic pre-collision braking.
All in all the 2016 Prius proves its worth by redefining what it means to be a true hybrid vehicle without compromising quality or performance. This is why the Prius remains the benchmark for which all other hybrids are measured.

It is safe to go for any Toyota/Lexus hybrid. I vouch for that.

The Toyota iFart seems to be a good car to be driven around in

Not after you have driven this:

Perfect combination of the beauty of a Landrover Freelander and the reliability of Japanese Suzuki engineering. In other words, it's a "luk kreung". As you know, the luk kreung Thai ladies are the most sought after in Thailand.

Just like this:

If one was choosing a Honda ot Toyota, which would be a better choice:confused:

I've owned a Corolla in the past but I got the impression than Honda cars were more expensive & had a more luxurious interior.

Toyota should be a better choice. Altis and Camry models.

Honda by a mile.

Altis is a boring car. You could feel the vibration from the undercarriage as if you are inches away from the tarmac. Camry is better but feels like a moving water melon. A Nissan Teana will beat Camry hands down in terms of comfort.

If you are contemplating retirement in Thailand, why buy a Altis when you can flag one on the road for 35 baht ? Every taxi driver is driving a Altis.

Car mechanics rather you drive a non-Toyota car to ensure regular biz for themselves. Especially continental cars.

Prices in Thailand (divide by 25 for S$)

why the fuck would they name a toyota prius after a prion, which is a infectious particle found in uncooked meat that is neither bacteria nor a virus and is the cause of neurodegenerative disease like mad cow disease?

While not too sure about the Toyota hybrid, a colleague of mine bought a Honda hybrid a few years back, was told by the distributor that the battery could last at least 7 to 8 years. But he has to change it at year 5. The batt was pretty expensive I recall at almost 6 to 7 k. He was remarking that even with the money saved from the petrol, it's all gone with the replacement of the batt. After hearing it, wasn't not so sure about the potential savings. Maybe it could be different for a Toyota Prius.........

I had posted before about my Hybrid Camry -

- got it in September 2009 when first launched in Bangkok
- about a year later was told Toyota begun to give 10 years battery warranty for new buyers
- think within a month hearing the above, was pleasantly surprised to receive a letter from Toyota informing me that my car battery warranty had been changed to 10 years from the day I bought the car.
- three and a half year later changed my car however my sales manager wanted it so sold to her, she's still driving it now its been 6.5 years she told me there's no problem and still getting like 14km to a litre.

Toyota is a pioneer of hybrid vehicle I have no doubt in them.

Honda buoyed to first place by Civic, Odyssey

This year Honda edged out Hyundai to have the lowest number of check-engine repair incidents and affiliated costs. Honda was most improved among major automakers, jumping from fifth place last year to the top, thanks to major improvement in Honda Odyssey minivan reliability and the 2012 Civic, which was the most reliable compact car.

Among other brands, Toyota placed third overall, while GM and Ford placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Mazda ranked as the brand with the lowest average repair cost, at $302.92, and while Toyota has the most expensive average cost, at $486.93, CarMD notes that this number is offset by both a higher frequency of catalytic converter replacement and rather expensive hybrid battery replacement.

Honda, Ford, Kia, Mazda, and BMW all had improved Vehicle Health Index ratings for 2014, although half of the brands in the top ten showed a drop in reliability this past year.

Toyota should be a better choice. Altis and Camry models.

To be fair must compare the models with the same price point. In the old days it was much Simpler e.g. Honda Civice vs Toyota Corolla, Honda Prelude vs Toyota Camry.

Been a while since I had a car, so really lost when it comes to the current models:o
