A 25 year old NS man who completed his full time National Service (NS) obligation last year was today (Feb 11) jailed 1.5 month for evading NS. Brian Joseph Chow failed to get a deferment in 2009 and went ahead to complete his university degree at the University of Western Australia in 2013. He then returned to Singapore voluntarily to enlist for 2 years of NS.

However, upon ORD, Brian was charged for NS evasion and was initially sentenced to a S$4,500 fine. The Singapore Armed Force (SAF) appealed the sentence and the judge sentenced him to 1.5 month jail. The High Court judge, Chan Seng Oon, claimed the accused’s outstanding performance in NS as a mitigating factor in an oral judgment:

“I allow the prosecution’s appeal. I would have given him three months if not for the fact that his performance during NS was outstanding.”

It appears that Brian has made a serious mistake of placing his faith in the SAF and the Singapore judiciary by thinking he would avoid jail time if he volunteered to serve NS. His jail sentence commenced immediately today, with no grounds for deferment and bail.

70% of voters: Jail him! Cane him!

National service should be reduce to 6 months. That will add another 18 months of productive employment and possible taxable income for PAP.

NS should be 2.5 years like in the past. We need the soldiers to train long enough in the arts of war to build a strong military. In these uncertain times, we cannot be sure of Malaysia and Indonesia's commitment to peace. A strong sinkie conscript army would keep them quiet.

U go to jail for serving ur country gallantly, what an insult.meanwhile foreigners are walking around like they own this bitch.

No jobs in Ozzy so cum back here to plug resume gap?

Bet you are willing to serve 250 years

How did he even get out of the country at 19 years without doing NS? He would not have been given an exit permit without a bond.

Don't be silly. We have FTs for that.

You are essentially saying that sinkees can only get out of the NS slavery if sinkapore gets conquered. Let it happen. Look at how the Chinese are thriving in Indonesia and Mudland despite their 'lower' status.
Life is better without the PAP.

Shows how vindictive the PAP government is.

MINDEF should be asked why did it NOT allow this sinkee to complete his education? What is the rationale of that policy? Why can't exceptions be made?

That he had returned to serve after completing his studies demonstrates his responsibility and commitment to sinkapore. So, why the hell, alienate and ruin the life of a productive sinkee by giving him a criminal record?

Damn the PAP. Sinkees should wish the worst upon the Minister of Defence; may he die in the most cruel way.

They deliberately tekaned him despite them saying he was a good NSman. They could have court martialed him right off the bat and them make him do his NS after the sentence was over. When I was in the SAF and defending court martial cases there is no criminal record. U have a dishonourable discharge, and it can be used against you for uni entrance, but no criminal record because its a military and not a civilian case. But they brought him to a civilian court, so will end up with criminal record.

The PAP's biggest fear is sinkees revolting. Yet, it is sowing the seeds of the revolt with such petty vindictiveness. Sinkees will wake up one day and when that day comes, I can't wait to see the whole bunch of PAP elites taken to justice. There is no punishment that is too much to punish the PAP for their crimes against the country and its people.
