When Michael Palmer resigned from his seat some time after the election, what happened?

The seat was replaced with WP's Ms Lee Li Lian, who won through a democratic process (the by-election).

Now that this WP's candidate does not want to take up the seat, WP wants to have its own free choice of another candidate to take up the NCMP seat.

I know, there are differences. For the former scenario, the Constitution made it clear that there has to be a by-election to replace the seat. The PAP cannot just pick its own choice of candidate to replace Michael Palmer.

For the latter, the Constitution, which was drawn up by the Government when the NCMP scheme was established, gives the Opposition the opportunity to start a debate in Parliament, so they can replace the NCMP seat.

However, Singaporeans as well as the Government must be mindful of what message the decision will send across, should WP be allowed its free choice of candidate. This is aside from WP's previous contradicting stand on the NCMP scheme.

Most of those supporting WP's alternative candidate has cited reasons such as how the Government should not be so "petty" and should give chance to the WP. Hopefully WP's stand will not be the same - which is to view it as an entitlement rather than a privilege.

If the Government portrays itself as one who gives so many concessions to the Opposition, the demands of the Opposition's supporters will only get larger and larger (it already is going in this direction).

This one debate may just set the tone for more to come - to replace time which could be used for debating critical national issues, with time used to debate on why the Government should give more concessions to the Opposition.

It is not merely a matter of allowing one candidate to take on the NCMP seat. It is how the people, as well as WP, views this. If WP does get what it wanted, will it respect the decision, cherish all the time spent on debating and understand that this is not merely an entitlement for them? Or will it see this as something which is rightfully theirs, and be encouraged to have more debates like this one? (debates which replace those on critical national issues)

The people's views and the WP's stand on this will be crucial.

WP Lee Li Lian Snubs NCMP Seat
Of Duty to Country vs Personal Gratification

So it is confirmed. Lee Li Lian has vacated her NCMP seat.

When asked, she posted a photo of her swimming (supposedly in a condo) with her cute baby in her FB and said: “… I understand that the procedure is for me to be absent twice before a Motion can be moved to have someone take up my place … Catching up on family time in a serious way! Have an awesome weekend.”

Noble thing for any normal mum to do. But she is not normal. She carried the hopes of more than 15K voters who voted for her, and was given a chance to represent them as NCMP so that their voices can be heard. She dropped them like a bomb.

She is not the only young mum in Parliament.

Tin Pei Ling just gave birth. She continued to work hard pre-GE, during GE and post-GE.

Sun Xue Lin has a daughter. She spent whatever time she has with her before attending Parliament. Not to mention Ms Sim Ann has three young children and she continues to pound her estates aggressively (as seen in her FB post).

There is choice here for women, a difficult choice. Ironically, as Sylvia Lim aptly said in her FB yesterday evening: “Women for Good! There are still not enough women in Singapore politics. As mothers, daughters, wives and as equal citizens, our contribution is vital to Singapore’s well-being.”

Li Lian got an opportunity, but she dropped it as quickly as she lost the GE. It is as if she wanted to lose and then gave “noble” excuses about the NCMP scheme. That is crap. If she did not want to serve, then don’t run. When you run, you are responsible to your voters. Worst, she vacate her seat and gave the opportunity to lesser men (in terms of vote shares) in her Party.

Maybe the truth is, after 5 years of MP allowance and doing nothing much, she now have enough money to tide over the next five years. We may see Li Lian again 5 years later when her money runs out and the MP allowance will be useful again.

Dr Chee and SDP will lose an arm and a leg to win a NCMP seat so that Dr Chee and SDP can speak up for 30% of Singaporeans.

3L is a disappointment.

When Michael Palmer resigned from his seat...they go on overseas trips very quietly & take no photos or all photos become private & mangoes was no longer "approved fruits".

Don't know if they paid someone in the past, who was IN...but never IN.....nobody saw the expense account of the theatre called "parliament"..

if it is still @ 15% $$$ of MP 's $$$ allowance then i worry for all NCMP - i worry they will speak up no more than Once in 5 yr term :D

since NCMP is like an MP job less voting rights - allowance should be raise to min 50% of MP's

The pap voters in hougang and punggol east are still waiting for Desmond choo and arsehole doctor to go back and serve them.

What a betrayal I say.

Well said. Son of Punggol betrayed his kin and joined Ang Mo Kio. Do we see zeroo creating a headline over it?
