The young are complaining and with reason to boot, the under-30 unemployment rate rose to 4.3 per cent in September last year, from 3.9 per cent in September 2013. Not a very good figure or optimistic news for someone that’s about to come out and join the workforce.

It’s been explained that part of the reason that youth unemployment has rose is due to the slowing economy. It has made bosses more weary about hiring in this economic climate as most firms are looking to protect themselves from what is to be an economic downturn.

On the bright side, the weaker economy has pushed job seekers to be creative with their resumes adding some additional qualifications so they stand out from the pack of job seekers in our hungry society. Quite a number of job seekers have decided to take on additional certification such as the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) to add additional colour and weight to their resumes. While other graduates have sought for jobs outside their field of study and lowered their expectations just to gain employment.

It’s going to be stressful for new job seekers in the short term as economic partners such as China are facing a slow growing economy as well as with oil prices dropping and affecting the overall economy. However Singapore has always been resilient society and with resourceful thinking and a never say die attitude, these graduates will one way or another be able to find gainful employment.

We ask this same question every year. There is no good time as now if you know how to seize your opportunity.

The world is not just Singapore. Don't be limited by the well. Look beyond. The world is your oyster.

Nothing is guaranteed in life so why should jobs be any different.

However the statistics certainly are good news because it means that 96% of youth will find employment thanks to the PAP.

oh so u think after 50 years of PAP's magnificent stewardship of our country, maybe things dont look so good underneath and its time to bail out?

youth mind set must be changed.
why do u need to work for others?
we must also think of working for ourselves and be our own boss.

this i guarantee u will be the future of singapore, after 2 decades of stagnating economy and countless failed attempts to resuscitate the economy through stimulus and debt expansion and credit, japan is now struggling under a insurmountable national debt of 200 percent gdp and very little to no growth.homelessness and tent cities are rising all over the country, many youngsters are homeless and living in internet cafes or on the streets,1/3rd of the young working population in their 20s/30s are part time workers with little benefits making $40 to $60 a day, university graduates are finding it incredibly hard to find full time jobs, for every 600 jobs theres 10,000 applications, young japanese workers are working 12 to 16 hours and dieing from overwork, youngsters are going to military styled bootcamps and expensive resume interview schools in the hopes of pegging a job with a respectable company.the whole country is running on desperation where the people are throwing themselves into kamikaze mode or suicide in a desperate hope that there might be salvation for themselves and their country like in world war 2.

one day singapore will reach the stage too, when the importing of immigrants no longer work, when the pumping of cheap credit and loan interest rates no longer work, when debt levels are so high, stimulus and q.e. is no longer effective.

Hi there

1. All daft sinkies, wake up and smell the kopi :D
2. There is simply no free lunch.
3. Get off the high horse & face the harsh reality.
4. Yes, it sucks big time.

The 70% which consist of mostly the 1st time voters..voted for the pap..so they reap wat they sow

its a worldwide phenomena. Companies do not give life long employment anymore. its all based on short term contracts. This is to cut down on unnecessary costs during a downturn.

Why they worry?? sigh!...JOIN THE PAP, WORK FOR THE PAP, VOTE FOR THE PAP....YOU ARE GUARANTEED TO GET RICH & HAVE AN INCOME FOR LIFE, EVEN YOU GOOFED...

JOIN THE PAP...A LIFE LONG CAREER...some say the best in the world & on planet earth...

That's why I sent my kids to elite schools. This will greatly improve their odds at landing a top PSC scholarship, which will guarantee them very good employment terms for the next 10 years once they enter the workforce. And I don't have to fork out a cent for their Ivy League college tuition fees.

I hereby gurantee that in your life time the sun rises in the east & sets in the west.... always

Whether Pap is around or not is not the point. How you think how you can do well in life not depending on PaP is the point.
