Mum trades sales job for military career
Having worked in a sales job in the private sector for more than 20 years, Madam Goh Mei Lan decided to seek her second wind in the military. "I felt I was stagnating... I needed a change and to do something that would challenge me," said the 41-year-old, who has an 11-year-old son. She traded her corporate wear for military fatigues at the start of this year and is now training to be an army engineer.
Madam Goh is one of 50 mid-career professionals hired by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) between last April and March this year as part of efforts to boost its ranks amid declining birth rates.
As the oldest woman to be recruited as a combat soldier, Madam Goh said her journey has not been easy. "All the people around me were very young women who were fitter ," she said.
But she held her own in training.
"I was not the slowest during our runs or combat training. I also had previous work experience and could teach them how to cope with the workload," she said.
Colonel Francis Kee Eng Chye, who heads the SAF's Joint Manpower Department, is targeting those who want to make a mid-career switch as "they bring with them valuable skills and knowledge into the organisation".
He added: "They can join us at different stages of their working life as we develop them into leaders of our nation's defence... to realise their full potential."

I do not miss NS days. At the same time, I did not hate NS either. I just did it because I was required by law to do so, and while at it, I did the best I could, and looking back, I enjoyed my days there. Invited to lots of parties, made lots of friends, drank lots of beer, laughed a lot, and had fun. I had the opportunity to visit I think every combat camp in the island and ate in all the cookhouses (best was the beef rending at 5SIR muslim cookhouse and fried chicken at Commando camp). The two and a half years there did not amount to anything constructive in my later life and in this view, may be "wasted" years, but everyone else had to go through it, so I ain't complaining. Would I go through it again? Given a choice, no.

I think I was lucky and fortunate. After BMT, got to stay out of camp for the rest of my NS stint. Weekends off too.

Unless one plans for a military career, the regimental discipline is the biggest turnoff. Also, those who plan for academic continuity will have this path interrupted by NS. But since we are all required by law to enlist, it is better to approach it with a positive mindset. For some, it turned out to be a worthwhile career move.

Haha. Nope. And during NS, I took full advantage of the tax-free beer. Almost every Saturday, you will find me buying a case at NCO club in Beach Road.
Also, having eaten at both muslim and non-muslim cookhouses, I have to add that the muslim cookhouse is cleaner. In the non-muslim cookhouse, sometimes the soldiers would come in straight from field-training, soaked in sweat and covered in m&d, and stink up the hall. In the muslim cookhouse, the soldiers come in clean and dry uniforms. I think it is more respectful and dignified. Hate to say, the non-muslim cookhouse looks like it is for pigs.

some parts of it was fun the pretending and make believe you are a soldier and some of the routine was comforting,but 80 percent of it was just boredom and torture.ns is too constricting and limiting.we have more aspirations to life and more important things to do and learn.
if ns only lasted like half a day it would be great,like we get to fuck off at 2pm.
if u truly enjoyed the monotony and excitement of ns life,you are probably suited for the life of a taxi driver or bus driver.
