UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday called for global efforts to defend authority and role of the United Nations and vowed to deepen cooperation with the world body.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, Xi said in his meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly.

On that occasion, the international community should reaffirm the commitment to multilateralism, defend principles and purposes of the UN Charter, safeguard authority and role of the UN and make joint efforts to promote world peace and common development, Xi suggested.

I think the seat of UN (its headquarters) should be removed from being based in New York City. With access to all the world's wealth and resources, it should be based in the poorest and most impoverished nations and rotated among the poorest nations every four or five years. This will force construction of infrastructure financed by the world's collective wealth to be focused on where it is based for the duration of its tenure and allow the local population/companies to help stand on their own by the time its host period ends. Also, it is time the UN peacekeeping forced be reviewed for use in other areas like preventing poaching of endangered species and be authorised to shoot on sight any suspected poacher in protected forests/jungles.

I know it will be an unpopular idea, but I also see UN as ineffectual in many things it is supposed to do. And being permanently based in NYC doesn't help, only those lucky blokes who get posted to work there will benefit. I took a break from school and visited the UN building during my student days, while taking a coffee break in that building, I overheard some of their staff chatting about attending some broadway show and going for supper at some ritzy restaurant after that. They were having the time of their lives while millions all over the world are starving and/or face medical hardships withput access to aid! If people are genuine about helping others, they should sacrifice some comforts they have gotten used to. There are UN volunteer staff in poor places like Cambodia, Nicaragua, who help out the locals, they do not live in excessive luxury like their counterparts based in the Big Apple.
