For Opposition parties to really make in roads to Parliament to challenge the PAP, they must set aside whatever differences they have and consolidate the assets and resources. In a nutshell, Singapore has too many opposition parties. All the main parties have some very credible candidates who collectively could really challenge the PAP in these elections.
The problem is that the electorate often gets confused as to who is the most viable party to vote for to challenge the PAP ending up ultimately with a split votes scenario.
The best chance of gaining power is to pool resources under the biggest party (currently the WP) and contest under one umbrella group as a coalition.
Singapore is a small country. Look at EU countries like Germany, France or the UK or US which have much bigger populations but only one or two serious opposition parties. Countries like Malaysia and Singapore need to move away from such multi-political party frameworks otherwise incumbents will never get booted out of power.
Unfortunately for parties such as NSP, SDP, SPP etc what sets them apart as a political identity and ideolologies is greater than than what binds them together and so it is unlikely such coalitions can be formed in the near future.
