Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say defended the PAP Government’s policy on foreign labour at the East Coast GRC rally on Thursday (3 Sep).

He cited figures to say that Singaporean workers have benefited.

He said that the earlier liberal foreign labour policy were for the sake of Singaporeans. “I want to assure you, we did it for you,” he said.

He noted unhappiness over “too many foreigners”, with some thinking it was a mistake “to let so many in”.

But the high manpower growth of the past was in the context of economic instability, from the 1997 Asian financial crisis to the bursting of the dot.com bubble, Sept 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America and Sars in 2003.

“The world economy is becoming a lot more volatile. So, we decided we must find ways to provide better protection to our Singaporean workers. Let’s expand our workforce. Any company that comes to us… we allow them to bring in more (foreign) workers,” he tried to explain.

“Whenever the wind blows, catch the wind.”

He cited figures:
