Mr Low Thia Khiang on Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew's resignation

LTK: Public deserves to know real reason for LTY's resignation

In response to Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew stepping down from politics after only 2 terms, WP chief Low Thia Khiang said that the circumstances surrounding Mr Lui’s decision leave many questions unanswered.

Mr Low said, “I thought he’s a hardworking minister and goes to the ground to try his best to resolve transport issues. It’s a loss to the Cabinet. He’s an experienced minister with experience helming different ministries.”

Mr Low noted that Mr Lui is “relatively young” and can still contribute to the nation given his experience helming different ministries. Mr Lui is 53 years old.

But Mr Low also queried the Minister’s sudden and unexpected resignation, “Was it because of the recent incident of the MRT big breakdown, or is it because he feels that he has not been supported by his Cabinet colleagues, who are supposed to work as a team to give him enough confidence to stay on and to solve the issues?”

“I thought the standard ethos of the PAP is that resignation doesn’t solve the problem. You have to stay on to solve the problem as a minister, so I cannot understand why it happened at this time.”

He said the public want more answers on the lead-up to Mr Lui’s decision to quit.

Noting that Mr Lui’s predecessor, Raymond Lim, also left the Cabinet after helming the Transport Ministry, Mr Low questioned whether the government needed to fundamentally rethink Singapore’s transport model, “Was it because, philosophically, how they treat transport is not correct and not convincing to the Minister for Transport?”

He also wondered if Mr Lui’s “morale” was affected after his Moulmein ward in Moulmein-Kallang GRC was “chopped off into pieces and redistributed” to other GRCs.

“We do recognise that the problem of transport is not something that can be easily solved like building more HDB flats,” he said. “I think it’s a long-term problem because it’s heavily used every day.”

PM Lee on Tuesday (11 Aug) revealed that he and other Cabinet ministers had tried unsuccessfully to persuade Mr Lui to stay.

Meanwhile, Mr Low has pledged to run for re-election in Aljunied GRC. However, there are hints that some of the present Aljunied GRC MPs may be deployed to other constituencies to contest against the incumbent PAP.

who doesnt like a name like Tuck You? it just rolls off your tongue.....tuck you tuck you tuck you :D

I think he was born with the wrong surname.

He would have gained so much more street cred if his name were 'Lee Tuck Yew'.

i am also very surprised that wrong cant sing has choosen to step down. he was a very good and capable minister and has made history. i recall the time when mas selamat decided to make a day trip around the island to scout for the best nasi lemak. it was a huge ruckoo consider they dont even know if he was a terrorist on paper or stone or scissor. AND mr wong make this remarkable discovery that even confounded einstein to this very day.

that mas selamat is either in singapore or he waved selamat to singapore. absolute brillance... because einstein even admitted that he took 52 man years to solve that puzzle.

just look at that man... the best nephew of horrible man. he is so important and a national treasure that the FAP has to send gurkhas to protect his home.

i have to say that his departure from public office will be a sad loss, loss of million$ for him. insurmountable.

What a snide remark shrouded in pretense ... like a wolf in sheep's clothing.

If you want to show genuine concern for LTY, just be sincere about it and wish him well.

Please don't use him as a political bait to create unwanted rumors and speculation. This is so insincere. This is low class politics.

LHL has already published the letters concerning LTY's resignation. If you are really concerned for LTY, go visit him!

Talk so much ! Can you be a Transport Minister or not ?

Listen to what he said:
“We do recognise that the problem of transport is not something that can be easily solved like building more HDB flats,” he said. “I think it’s a long-term problem because it’s heavily used every day.”

What the fxxx is a LONG-TERM PROBLEM ? In the LONG TERM, we are all dead.

Bottom line , so are you going to bring up Transport issues at your rally or not since you recognize this as a long term problem?

Totally disagreed. Taking advantage of others miseries (even your enemies') will not gain you any credit. In Chinese culture, you will be viewed as a "small people". It is pap's affair. Not good for wp to take advantage or they will be behaving just like pap.

Instead, he raised many questions, alluding to the fact that LTY had left because he lack support from the top and at the same time, the top has also lost respect from the subordinate.

Unhappy that he was not consulted or at least informed of the disbandment of Kallang Moulmein GRC in advance! Remember the Media interviewed him then and he was clearly upset!
Unhappy that he was not identified to lead Jalan Besar GRC or Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC while Yacult was able to proudly announced that he will be leading Jalan Besar GRC Team!
They rather see him quit than remove CEO, SMRT!
No Ministers or MPs came to his defence when he came under heavy ‘bombardment’ during the breakdown of the NSEW MRT lines. He shouldered all the blame!
Lui was cursed day and night by Singaporeans in social media for failing to lead the Transport Ministry (COE, bus schedules, trains breakdowns, fares hikes, etc). Many unkind words and names were ‘bestowed’ on him and him alone.
Finally, in early 2015 (before the NSEW line went down), he considered quitting to live a quieter and peaceful life. He highlighted his intent but no one took him seriously!
The final straw was when the NSEW MRT line went down and the ‘bombardment’ came non stop. SMRT was unable to identify the fault at first hand and that made the situation worse!
Lui’s exit is less painful than Raymond Lim. Lui choose to exit on his own instead of waiting to be axed.
Frankly, Lui’s exit will not make a difference to the Transport Ministry. Someone must be bold enough to step in and shake up the Ministry and and wake up the sleeping LTA and inefficient SMRT.
Lui has lead by example that many Ministers can follow. He has delivered a strong signal; if you are not performing, don’t sit around and earn the ‘filthy’ pay, make room for others who can do a better job!

We all see it coming.

And LTY made the decision himself. We all respect him for taking full accountability for the failures in the ministry.

But LTK, instead of showing understanding to LTY, is taking the opportunity to rub salt to his wound. Instead of wishing him well , he is using him as a bait to create unfounded speculation of his tendered resignation and drive a wedge between LTY and PAP and between PAP and the public.

Have some sense... Leave the man alone. LTY in his resignation letter , has already sent his best wishes for PAP. Is that not enough for you, LTK ?
