How desperate can the PAP get to increase its votes in the coming GE? Government departments are hosting dinners at hotels for their aged and retired staff in conjunction with the SG50 celebrations. Is the PAP that desperate to use tax-payers money to fete its old staff with the motive of getting these old geezers to vote for the PAP?

This "Pioneer Generation" thing is no more than part of a market segmentation exercise to win votes.
These "pioneers" are surprised that they are the pioneers. To them the pioneering days were just
part of getting on with life, trying to make a living to provide for their families. Nothing more, nothing less.

also a large proportion of singapore's poor population might be these "pioneers",after pioneering a large portion of their lives,they have nothing to show for it,while the country has prospered beyond their wildest dreams and moved on without them.unable to keep up with the times and the exponential cost of living,they are left to rot in the bottom dregs of society,singapore is no country for old men.
while in australia old folks are enjoying their golden dignified years at the casino playing slots with their generous biweekly pension and eating large schinitzel burgers and free complimentary fish and chips and enjoy a dignified retirement,sinkies pioneers are busy queuing up for their free $50 ez link topup so they can go to work on monday.

Relax lah. Vast majority of pioneers are die-hard LKY supporters, including those who once supported Barisan Socialists. With or without Pioneer Generation Package or freebies, they will continue to vote for PAP.

I've always thought the real pioneer generation were those coolies, travelling merchants and samsui women... those have been dead long ago.
Most of the 'Pioneer Generation' is in reality the post-war baby boomer generation.
That's what I call wishful thinking!
