South East Asian Games organisers launched an investigation into feared food poisoning on Thursday after "a bout of loose stools" struck several athletes in the cycling competition.

Cyclists complained their performance had been affected as the competition in Singapore got under way with the men's and women's individual time trials.

"The Singapore Southeast Asian Games Organising Committee has received a report of an incident involving a bout of loose stools that has affected a few athletes early this morning," a statement said.

"We are investigating the matter with the relevant authorities and reinforcing hygiene practices."

The Straits Times newspaper said the cyclists were staying at Resorts World Sentosa, a hotel, casino and funpark complex popular with tourists.

Malaysian rider Muhammad Fauzan Ahmad Lutfi blamed his dinner of chicken and curry egg for his performance after he finished 11th in the men's time trial.

"Two other riders, including my roommate, are down too. I think it was the chicken and the curry egg at dinner. I felt sick at around 1am last night," he said.

The incident follows a food poisoning outbreak at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, which affected more than 20 people working for the organising committee.

Food poisoning incident in Geylang Serai Market
Disease Outbreak
06 Apr 2009

1.*The Ministry of Health (MOH) and National Environment Agency (NEA) are investigating into a food poisoning outbreak involving the 'Rojak Geylang Serai' stall located at the Geylang Serai Temporary Market.

*

2.*To date, a total of 111 cases have been notified to MOH. 27 cases were hospitalised, while 84 received outpatient treatment at various Emergency Departments. These cases had onset of illness between 2nd and 4th Apr 2009. The main symptoms experienced by cases were severe abdominal cramps, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Preliminary investigations pointed to an association between their illness and the consumption of food purchased from the 'Rojak Geylang Serai' stall. A 59-year-old lady is currently critically ill in hospital. A 57-year-old lady who was admitted to Changi General Hospital on 4 Apr 2009 passed away this morning. Police have classified the case as one of unnatural death and are investigating.

3.*MOH and NEA conducted joint inspections at the food stall on 4 Apr 2009.* The stall has since been closed. The stallholder and his assistant have been directed by MOH to undergo screening for food borne pathogens at the Communicable Disease Centre. NEA has informed the operator to cease all business operations while MOH carries out its investigations. Epidemiological investigations are continuing.

4.*As a precautionary measure, NEA has conducted a hygiene inspection of all stalls at the centre and found them to be satisfactory. The stallholders have been advised to maintain a high standard of food and personal hygiene. NEA will continue to maintain close surveillance of hygiene standards of the centre.

5.*Members of the public are advised to discard any unconsumed food items purchased from 'Rojak Geylang Serai' stall. Anyone who has patronised the stall and is experiencing symptoms of food poisoning should seek immediate medical attention. If there are any queries, they can contact MOH at 1800-2254122.

Might not because of the curry , did they check if their bike have seat installed ?

KNN, CMI means CMI. Want to blame chicken and curry egg.

This trick is hardly original. The South Africans poisoned the All Blacks before the 1995 world cup finals.

are sinkies going to call for a coi for this?

loose stools are "hardly" the stuff for coi's to be convened...
but if said stools are rock (or boulder) hard, then er lee bee wah should be called upon to "chair" the coi ;)

rws mus cum cream...did dey cut cost by ordering de curry frm unlicensed Indonesian lady syndicate? :D

You don't fucking eat any curry if you have important things to do not just sports even important meetings or long distance travel. Real fucktards these people.

agree. better not to have spicy and oily food before strenuous activity. we learned that in ns (no shit). in preparation, it's better to have steamed beans, broccoli, onions, and cabbage to help produce gas for additional fuel if needed.

Yes. Host countries have been know to deploy dirty tricks to better their chances.....that's what is known as the home ground advantage.
Another usual trick is to house foreign athletes in lousy housing and make noise to keep them awake at night.

Only low class third world countries do that kind of shit. That's the sports equivalent of vote rigging during an election, or politicians entering the polling station on polling day etc.

Anyhow... the SEA Games is stupid. I bet they will jack up the prices of this and that to recoup the money spent once the SG50 euphoria has died down. ;)
