SINGAPORE - A 42-year-old cobbler befriended a 13-year-old schoolgirl and even asked her parents if he could be her godfather. But within two weeks, he was having sex with the girl.
Terence Ng Kean Meng was sentenced on Wednesday to 14 years in prison and 14 strokes of the cane, after he admitted to three counts of statutory rape and and penetrating the underage girl with his finger.

On the evening of Oct 29 that year, Ng and the victim were alone in his flat when she mentioned she was having stomach problems. Ng rubbed ointment onto the victim's stomach. He then asked her if she wanted to have sex, and she agreed. They had sex that day.
Over the next two months, they had two more trysts, once in his flat and once in an ancestral temple on Commonwealth Lane.

The girl was in Secondary One at the time and cannot be named to protect her identity.
The offences came to light after the girl’s mother died from illness and she confided in someone at her school. She later made a police report and Ng was arrested in February last year.
