[h=1]Why take 15 years to resolve Jurong Island bus problem?[/h][h=2][/h]


I CONGRATULATE new National Trades Union Congress secretary-general Chan Chun Sing on his appointment, and have no doubt he will do much for workers.

I am especially moved by his quick action to resolve the issue of infrequent bus services on Jurong Island ("New labour chief gives Jurong Island workers a hand"; Tuesday).
Jurong Island, which houses major oil and gas industries, is a major component of our economy.

The infrequent bus service frustrated workers for more than 15 years, and must have been a strain on productivity.

What amazes me most is that it took just one meeting for Mr Chan to resolve a 15-year-old problem.

Why did union leaders handling the issue let the matter fester for so long? Was this problem so insurmountable that previous labour chiefs were unable to resolve it?
