Not only actors and singers but behind the scenes personnel like songwriters directors etc.
Corey Yuen, John Woo etc made it to Hollywood even shows like departed also bought by Hollywood.
Even Taiwan managed to produce a world class director like Lee Ang.....
You're talking about a tiny land with a population fractionally larger than Singapore's but has produced great world-class actors through the years, e.g. Patrick Tze, Siu Fong Fong, Nam Hong, Cheng Pei Pei, Guan Shan, Shek Kin, Chow Yun Fatt, Tony Leung, Andy Lau, Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, Maggie Cheung, Carina Lau, Yueh Hua, Anthony Wong, Lawrence Ng, Nick Cheung, Louise Lee, the list goes on. Many are just not great actors but great entertainers and singers as well.
And who do we have? Xie Shaoguang, a decent actor. Aunties like Zoe Tay, flower vases like Fann Wong. Someone who can't act to save his life like Tay Ping Hui can even win a best supporting actor award. Go figure.
Ah so. Over here, dearth of what makes the celluloid clock tick. And yes, HK's post production's also way head startSo they always had a headstart. Sinkieland can never be compared to Hongkieland.
...lucky to get any scraps from the Hongkies ... like Hugo Ng (cat 3 actor), or has beens like Lydia sum and Kenneth Tsang (who abandoned sinkieland after a couple of years).
I find Hongkong's movies and TVB dramas mostly boring. I watch those TVB dramas promotion clips on Starhub TV, it's always the same lead actors and old faces, and it's always the same recycled story themes, and they seem so dull and boring. think TVB' dramas standard has heavily declined from its high standard of the 80s and 90s.
HK was already the center of commerce (and hence entertainment) from the colonial days. In 49, more artisans, scriptwriters, producers and the general upper class flocked there.
Someone who can't act to save his life like Tay Ping Hui can even win a best supporting actor award. Go figure.
True. The post-war influx from Shanghai and the mainland gave HK a headstart.
But Singapore could have done a lot better, given the amount of money and effort put in from the '80s onwards. Korea was nowhere when we made The Awakening (1984); its first regional hit serial Jewel in the Palace came out only in 2002, then Winter Sonata in 2003 which started the Korean Wave (Hallyu). See where the Koreans are today, barely 10+ years later, and where we stand.
The key reason is the lack of freedom of expression, not just in politics but also in the arts and culture. Other factors include our stifling educational system, the lack of govt support for the arts, the heavy-handed censorship here. Old fart once famously said that art and sports don't contribute to the national GDP!
That is singapore's biggest problem. Without Arts you will only have engineers, never an architect. Old man suppress creativity to dumb down singaporeans. No creativity = no opinions. Just look at what's happening now to the whole country after a 17 year old angry virgin said something controversial. We are a long way away from being like the Hongkies.

The standard of Japanese dramas started dropping after they introduced the concept of "Pretty Boys". Taiwan was quick to copy whatever Japanese, and introduced F4 into the fray. And not long after, they started casting these pretty boy singers in dramas and movies. The chief protagonist responsible for the rapid downfall of Taiwanese dramas is this lady:
I can see that Korea is adopting the same formula. If Lee Young Ae was born 20 years later, she would not have been given the role of "Dae Jang Geum". It would have gone to some K-Pop singer. Likewise, Bae Yong Jun would have also lost his role in Winter Sonata to some K-Pop pretty boy.
The market belongs to the youth, and it seems this generation of youngsters and even aunties care less about acting skills. For guys, if you're tall, all you need is a fashionable haircut, and you're in the showbiz. For most Korean guys are not handsome, to be honest. It's all about packaging.
Hong Kong is still a bit slow in catching up with casting of pretty boys in movies, perhaps because TVB continues to run acting classes for their own consumption. But if Hong Kong sinks just like Taiwan, then you know newbies with the potentials of Carol Cheng and Chow Yuen Fatt would never emerge from the sea of pretty boys and dancing girls.
The only female actress in my era that is worth a look is this lady, and even so, she is already 30 plus:
