It's doable. I believe the wefare given out is less than $500 a month for a single person to live on. However, if one is just earning $500 a month, pls don't get a wife whom one has to support and have children. Don't make more suffer together. If needs arise, just save up and go geylang once a month.

If $600 a month income, might as well don't work and apply welfare? Welfare should at least get half of $600, without incurring cost in transport, eating out during work and buying clothes etc work related expenses.

USA is the richest country in the world. if you go there, you see a lot of poverty in USA. The gov job is not to enrich everyone, but most people. The capitalist model will and must create poverty to work. It is not a perfect system. But a system everyone want.
