lee kuan yew cries

By Joshua Chiang

Many people wrongly assume I dislike or am angry at Lee Kuan Yew. I am not.

There is no denying that he is a remarkable politician, and among the leaders of post-colonial nations, probably one of the best. There is a lot about him that one can admire, his relentless drive, his gumption, his cunning.

But what frequently drives me up the wall is people who much rather adore the myth surrounding the man, and kept repeating the myth rather than understand/face the man behind the myth.

We want to believe in the myth of a man who cried on TV the day Singapore separated from Malaysia because how could one tiny nation have survived then?

But recent records have indicated that he was actually quite happy that the Separation took place; Tunku Abdul Rahman said: “I don’t know why Mr Lee acted like that…he was quite pleased about [the split].” ; Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Toh Chin Chye, who is also the founding chairman of People’s Action Party also said that he did not understand why Mr Lee cried just moments before the filming because he was very satisfied with the outcome.

Does this bring him a few notches down in my esteem? Hardly. Rather it is a sterling example of how much he had mastered the craft of being a politician to rally people behind him.

We want to believe the myth of the man whose singular vision for Singapore propelled it forward. But the fact of the matter is that he did his best work in the early days when he was surrounded by other giants – Goh Keng Swee, Toh Chin Chye, Rajaratnam, etc… people who were willing to stand up to him and tell him bluntly when he was being foolish. People who looked at him and saw a man. Not a myth.

We want to believe the myth of a man and his team who were unwittingly thrown into a desperate situation where the chances of survival were terribly slim when the British left, when Tunku Abdul Rahman kicked them out of the Federation. A hopeless situation. And we chose to ignore the political maneuvering, the backdoor dealing, an outcome that was scarcely unexpected but engineered.

Yes, that took ingenuity, no doubt about it. But this is not some grand Lord of The Rings story. This is Godfather and Goodfellas, and maybe a bit of Ocean’s Eleven put together. (And yes, I do love a good mafia story). And maybe quite a bit of War and Peace too, at least the portions in which Tolstoy introduced a way of history not as a story driven by individuals, but by the masses by social forces very often beyond any individuals’ control.

You wanna credit the man? Learn your history. No, learn History. Period.

You do him no favour by perpetuating the myth, by putting a halo around his head and then stuff him in a teddy-bear suit.

But perhaps this is inevitable.

It is a human need to turn people who have impacted other lives so much into lions with teddy-bear personalities over time. Mao, Deng, etc, they all become symbols on Teeshirts and theme restaurants.

We all want idols. People are complex, full of contradictions, their legacy often chequered.

But idols. Now that’s a different thing. They are less a reflection of the person, but of our very own desires.

Now, if only our former police scholar forummer and his easily impressionable sycophants/clones/similar-sounding-monikers could understand this. ;)

The education system and mainstream media have overhyped LKY's contributions and also conveniently glossed over his flaws.

Little wonder there are so many grateful gongkias and gongcheebais... some would even camp at SGH to offer prayers and flowers.

Another point of view...

“Consider not only the good, but the bad as well?”Looking for the perfect messiah? Name me one leader in history, or one current leader who’s all good n no bad? But it’s also a fair approach to a balanced view. In “considering not only the good, but the bad as well, forget not to have an objective views of both n at end of journey, look at the total balanced sheet! More good than bad? Or more bad than good! Be careful not to look for the perfect score!

We are now trying to crystalball the next 50 years? Did anyone look back 50 yrs ago to crystalball our last 50 years?

The success of the first 50 years was not even supposed to happen! It’s still n will be etched in spore n world history as a miracle! To any economist, any leader of past n present, for what spore had then, NOTHING(!), we ought to be lamenting the miseries of last 50 years n not criticising the man who made it all happen n now trying to crystalball the next 50 without him!

Perhaps LKY is a victim of his, not only own success, but overwhelming success! The last 50 years was so successful against all odds n initial hopelessness that the only verdict forward must be failure?!

Be grateful. Be demanding if you must! One may have gripes n complaints of the PAP of today. But it’s an entirely different matter compared with the efforts of LKY for making spore what she is today. We are all beneficiaries, in varying degree, of his governance n policies. The results speak for itself! We have massive hunger, unemployment, strikes, lawlessness, fears inflicted by gangsterism, swamps etc etc snatched away by his governance n policies. Now we are so affluent n comfortable that we have time to question his imperfections?

Looking for the perfect messiah? Perhaps in heavens!

Let’s not be ingrates!

don't be an ingrate
and lower yourself to the gutter

what myth
bloody shithead
this is the Truth!
the truth of the greatness of a great political leader
who had transformed the world in just one generation
with just one party and with just one iron hand

ingrates are everywhere
ungrateful unfilial and unschooled
idiots and fools and clowns

myth...myth your head lah!!!

Singapore is a overwhelming success?lmao people who say that obviously have never been outside this tiny country.compared to the likes of Melbourne and london city,SG is a 2nd rate template cut and paste city of mediocrity at best.economic success?go look up south Korea's economic miracle, they are a powerhouse in many sectors, our economy is nothing but bullshit based on cheap labor and low wages.

Myth about old fart.

Excerpt from Myth about a great Singapore leader

Old Fart was just ordinary ...it is not that big a deal to bring sinkapore to first world.

Hong Kong managed to achieve that without subduing rights, the judiciary, the unions. There were no strong man to do that, just a governor appointed by Britain.

Hong Kong has no resources either. In fact, it had more challenging conditions.

The fact is Old Fart painted himself to be a godsend to sinkapore. He wasn't. He play Russian roulette with the lives of sinkees. He didn't lose only because the task wasn't as complex as he painted it.

But now we are burdened with the consequences of his idiotic policies.

one of LKY's greatest bullshit was convincing the people that without English as the no.1 language, the country would sink and die. his suppression of the Chinese language/culture is justified because of that. what nonsense and bullshit. so many countries know shit English and are doing very well. this is already 2015 and dialects are still banned on free-to-air TV. why can't the PAP lift the damn ban ?

Totally agree.

Just look at China which achieves its success not with the English language but sheer biz savvy, hard work and hunger for success

You know what the French call such people? Un petit moine. (It's a highly derogatory term.)

If LKY were such a great leader, how come he got kicked out of the Malayan Federation ahhhh?

If LKY's ideas were sooo awesomely powderful, how come they couldn't work in Thailand, Burma, Indonesia, hah??

How come LKY didn't come up with workable ideas for Thailand to reconcile the yellow shirts and the red shirts?

I am born in the era of the creation of the GRC and I believe without Lee Kuan Yew's foresight to creat the GRC Singapore would have collapse into racial war, long live Lee Kuan Yew, long live GRC, long live PAP.

holy crap is that a myth?

i was shitting out of a bucket when ky introduced the sit-down flushing water closet to all sinkie coolies. it was a godsend, and to this day, i'm still very grateful and proud of him. banzai!

LKY, the godfather of hygiene and sanitation.

People of my generation do not need to study the history books...we lived through HISTORY. The old Chinese saying, "eaten more salt, than rice" than all these so called people they know HISTORY! not His story, Her Story to Their Story.

An era must end...let us move on!

For once, Sideswipe is wrong. ;)

His greatest bullshit was convincing people (grateful gongkias) that he and his family members (and whoever else he names) is exceptional.

That was due to his irrational fear of commies or socialists whom he thought were mostly Chinese-educated and were a threat to his grip on power. Hence he fucked over Nantah and slapped restrictions on Chinese schools.

When China started becoming an economic powerhouse, he started kissing China's ass and called for more Sinkies to be 'effectively bilingual' or be 'bicultural experts'.
