As far as possible, the profession should be taken up mostly by Singaporeans. We should recruit foreign doctors only as a last resort.
As we know, there is a limit to the number of doctors that our local medical school can produce currently. Perhaps, the Government should consider giving the same dollar value subsidy to eligible local Singaporeans to do their medical training overseas. To make it more affordable, the Government could give them the option of a higher subsidy with a corresponding increase in their bond upon successful completion of their medical training.
I believe we have many capable and eligible young Singaporeans who can become good doctors, but are denied the opportunity of becoming one because of limited places in our local medical school.
This should not be the case.We should explore all possibilities to train our own doctors. Lim Mui Kong
