why is singtel is charging sms.mms and call airtime?

with watsapp and some other apps which provide free sms, mms and free call airtime which even include long distance, why is singtel still charging like nobody's business?

my niece who's abroad always calls back. monster in law, her grandma would hurry her to hang up becos long distant call is very expensive. but niece told her not to worry. it's FREE OF CHARGE! and we could even see her on the handphone.

It's NOT free........users pay for the data plan. In fact, the one who sends and the one who receives also end up paying. Your niece is dumb. For VOIP calls, it is also NOT free. Same, the cost is in the data plan, both sides pay.

now telcos are increasing the free no of sms and decreasing your data allocation.

i think i'd rather have more free data. most smartphone users here can easily reach 900MB usage faster than using 900 SMS.

It just so happen that mobile can use Wifi through a router to connect to internet for VOIP, hence bypassing the mobile data plan limitation.......if not, you'll be using your PC.....nothing to argue about. If the Telco disables one part of the connectivity, you're toast.

I use more than 900MB each month............more like 6 to 7GB, but I'm covered with my data plan..........so I dun use Wifi when I upgrade all my apps, which is veri frequent.

i had a visitor recently. he bought a phonecard. b4 he could use his hp to call after he on it, the card immly showed 0$. we tot it was a defective card which cost him $20 and since we were in exeter rd, might as well went into singtel n checked. guess what?

all the value stored in the card was exhausted by dunno what nonsense download which my pal didnt even ask for.

so people, pls be alerted to how singtel can trick your foreign visiting pal.

I don't understand why she doesn't use cheaper methods like Skype which is available if you have an internet connection
I use it to contact my friends who are overseas.

you should have alerted your friend to switch off mobile data if his sole intention and purpose of the sim card is to make/receive calls and send SMS.

Ad hoc data charges are very costly. If your friend really needed to use the internet, he should have signed up for the data plan on the singtel hi-card (prepaid card).

I believe it is $7 for 1GB for 7 days. He would still have $13 for calls/sms.

i dont see the fucking reason why in such a densely populated country every single flat needs to have its own broadband or 300mb/s fibre,i mean seriously?just put 5 or 6 wifi spots in the whole hdb flat,and the whole block share the monthly bill of $400 a month,less than $5 per household.

libraries have free wifi,hostels have free wifi,hotels have free wifi,casinos have free wifi.obviously wifi infrastructure is big enough to cover entire buildings.

no problem,they do this in every lan shop or hotel,throttle the maximum bandwitdh of every pc or laptop connection to maximum 900 kb/s.fast enough for most things including streaming,downloading big torrent files still acceptable speed.u can download 700mb movie in 40 mins.

neither did i know he had bought a singtel phonecall which on registering it into his hp was zapped dry of any more cash value. only after checking with singtel that they explained to us but didn't refund the lost amt which wasn't even used. bo bian, my pal bought another card and requested the singtel guy to cut off all the the download settings.
