<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"-->MADAM Amutha Valli Krishnan, 53, the woman who lost her suit in the 'exorcism case', has to pay costs of more than $372,000 for taking on the Novena Church.
She had unsuccessfully sued the church, two priests and six church goers for psychiatric ailments resulting from what she claimed was an exorcism ritual.
She may have to pay a further $92,600 in disbursements if the Supreme Court registrar orders her to.
After meeting her lawyer, Mr R.S. Bajwa, as well as the lawyers for the defendants in chambers on Monday, Justice Lee Seiu Kin ordered Madam Valli to pay the six church goers $300,000 in costs and disbursements, which include court filing fees and other paperwork.
She also has to pay $67,700 for disbursements to the church and Father Simon Tan, and another $5,000 for disbursements to Father Jacob Ong.
Other disbursements, amounting to $34,600 for the church and Father Simon, and $58,000 for Father Jacob, comprising largely of costs in getting psychiatrists to testify for the defence, were referred to the Supreme Court registrar to decide if the amount is fair and should be paid by Madam Valli.
Senior Counsel Jimmy Yim, who acted for Father Simon and Mr Tito Issac for the church and Father Jacob had not asked for their fees to be included in the costs.
This could probably amount to $1 million for the 32-day trial for the two teams of lawyers. 'If the lawyer does not charge his client fees, then he is not entitled to the costs' said Mr Bajwa.

She is screwed alright, trying to squeeze a few hundred thousands from church.

She is lucky. The main defendents' lawyers did not charge them fees. It could have been $1.46M.

Note, does not include her lawyer's fees.

This is what happens when you have kids that think they are smart.

Lucky? For a woman of her status that sum is likely enough to kill, let alone the full costs that would only drive the nail deeper into her coffin.

It is just a difference of being dead and being more dead and dead that's all. No luck is involved, so please revise your language.

no sympathies from me..

she is obviously a keling snake con-woman.. she deserves it fully..

Serves her bloody right....knn try and take on God and cry foul...ptuiiiiiii

Let this be a lesson to all the 'snakes'

I think it better for her to declare bankrupt ! Becos the interest rate for the sum arrears for 350k is too much to bear ...... e ven for a SME business man !

I believe this is quite obviously a scam to get money from the church, and it failed misserably.

I am actually amazed by the conduct of her 2 kids and her husband. I wonder what role her "sworn" brother and her lawyer played in this. Felt pity to the Prof and his student who was taken for a ride but did not want to concede when the NUS medical report/testimony and other patterns emerged.

My guess is that they worked as a team to earn a quick buck from the church. Unfortunately the story line sucks and there are a lot of loop holes for the defendents to poke at. Worse still, they did even try to conseal that she is well, let people take pictures of her going out happily for dinner.

Agree with you.

A foreigner who had watched this case provided an interesting viewpoint. He noticed that Singaporeans tended to associate good english with good education and high intelligence. Only when foreigners from commonwealth countries staterd come in large numbers, did they realise that good english did not mean much.

He said that this family might have thought they were well educated and intelligent only to find out that they really looked bad, silly and stupid for all the world to see.

He added an additional tidbit - He could not help notice that local bartenders who spoke good clear english tended to mix, associate and identify themselves with foreigners only to find that they were out of their depth. Though this country has its share of intelligent people but he could not fathom why good English speakers were regarded as intelligent.

<!-- story content : start --> A FAILED lawsuit, which a woman took against a Catholic church, two priests and six churchgoers over an alleged exorcism, is coming back to haunt her. Three of the churchgoers whom Madam Amutha Valli Krishnan, 53, sued in 2006 are now applying to the courts to make her a bankrupt.
Madam Valli owes the trio - Mr Benny Tan Chin Beng, Mr Nasrom Abdullah and Ms Cheong Lai Meng - a total of $150,000 in costs that the court ordered her to pay as a result of her lawsuit.
