However, no official language exists at the federal level. There have been several proposals to make English the national language in amendments to immigration reform bills,[SUP][6][/SUP][SUP][7][/SUP] but none of these bills has become law with the amendment intact. The situation is quite varied at the state and territorial levels, with some states mirroring the federal policy of adopting no official language in a de jure capacity, others adopting English alone, others officially adopting English as well as local languages, and still others adopting a policy of de facto bilingualism.

Instead of writing i believe why not you search around?

It's not official. It's the most widely spoken but it's not the national language as in ordained by law. This is very different in singapore's case whereby malay is considered the national language. Notice the contrast.

yeah alright whatever,u think its not because of a technicality?try going up to a american and telling him english is not the national language, arabic is USA national language or maybe chao ni ma,son of a bitch or try going back to the 1900s,when none of the freaking immigrants existed and try asking the white man what language they speak.

dumbfuck just because of the immigration madness in past couple of decades now suddenly america is no longer english country?

by the way dumbfuck malay is our national language is to pay respect to who we are, that after all we are but a COLONY.a ALIEN CONSTRUCT ON MALAY LAND.TAKE A FUCKING LOOK AROUND U WE ARE SURROUNDED BY BROWN COUNTRIES.....THIS IS THE MALAY ARCHIPILAGO AND THE PACIFIC ISLANDS AND THE INDOMONKEYS WHATEVER AND THE FILIPINOS,THEY ARE ALL BROWN.THIS IS NOT OUR NATURAL HABITAT,SINGAPORE MAY SEEM CHINESE TO YOU BUT CHINESE PEOPLE DONT BELONG HERE,WE CAME FROM A PLACE CALLED CHINA.

ROFL proven this guy wrong and he comes barking like a mad dog. English isn't the national language of the US yet you were the one claiming it is and when i proved you wrong you had to retort with crap.

The fact of the matter is english isn't the national language of the US but malay is in singapore. The rest you wrote is all garbage and gibberish.

oh by the way u retard....since u are so hard up on this so called "fact" of urs.

At last, America has an official language (and yes, it's English)

In a new twist to the contentious immigration debate, the Senate has voted to designate English the national language of the United States, and to effectively ban federal government ordinances and services in any language other than English.

The 63-34 vote, on an amendment offered by the Oklahoma Republican James Inhofe, split the Senate along largely party lines, with only nine of the 44 Democrats voting for it, and just one Republican voting against.

The amendment has mainly symbolic significance and may not make it into the immigration bill that eventually emerges from the Senate, let alone into the final version that must be agreed with the House for Congress to send for signature to President George Bush.

But in a confusing debate passions ran high, with the Democratic minority leader Harry Reid labelling the amendment "racist", and Ken Salazar, a Colorado Democrat of Hispanic ancestry, calling it "divisive and anti-American". Not only does it overrule any claims to multilingual services, but the measure also stipulates rigorous testing to ensure would-be citizens have a sound knowledge of both the English language and US history.

Muddying the waters further, the Senate then passed by a 58-39 margin a more moderate amendment that declares English merely to be the "common unifying language of the US".

The furore over the language proposals are more evidence of how Mr Bush's prime-time address on immigration, when he proposed a "sensible middle way", has failed to bridge the gulf between the two sides.

In his speech on Monday, the President announced the dispatch of 6,000 National Guardsmen to beef up controls along the 2,000-mile US/Mexico border, but also urged a mechanism that would permit long-term illegal immigrants to apply for citizenship.

The aim was to offer enough sticks to placate conservatives, and enough carrots to satisfy the pro-immigrants, thus consolidating support among Hispanics which Republican strategists see as a key part of a long-term majority for the party in US politics.

But the Republican right is still outraged by what it considers "amnesty" by another name, and party leaders in the House have vowed to block any such provision. The bipartisan measure now under debate in the Senate allows a guest-worker programme - capped at 200,000 a year - and provides for illegal immigrants who have been here for at least five years to embark on the road to citizenship.

The pro-immigrant lobby is increasingly worried about the rightward tilt of the debate. The Senate passed a separate amendment this week backing construction of a 370-mile-long "fence" along the border, and the move to formally designate English as America's national language is seen as yet another gambit by immigration foes to toughen the final bill.

Even so, the Senate version is far less harsh than the measure passed by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. This contains no procedure leading to citizenship, would turn the border into a quasi-militarised zone, and impose tougher sanctions on illegal immigrants and those who employ them.

The linguistic melting pot

* Legend has it that English only defeated German by a single vote to become the official language of the United States, in a 1795 Congressional debate.

* Until now, America has never had an official language. Before World War I, more than 6 per cent of US primary school children were taught in German. More than 45 million Americans say their ancestry is German.

* Mass immigration throughout the 20th century means 336 languages are currently in use, including 176 indigenous dialects.

* Over 47 million Americans speak a language other than English at home. Spanish speakers make up just under 30 million of that total.

What's your point?

The fact of the matter is english isn't the national languge of the US and you said it was proven you to be wrong. I then used singapore as an example to show how malay is the national language while english isn't for the US thereby proving you wrong the rest is you ranting on like a mad dog so enraged to be proven wrong.

Your IQ clearly ranges in the lowly retarded section but at least you can be the king of imbeciles which would be the idiots amongst idiots.

pls just keep smoking ur crack and whatever,ur english is bad enough as it is already ur not making any fucking sense.

he has another nick MANAGER.

His style of argument is the same without substance, keep harping and merry go round and round. wasting time to argue with a frog in a well.

You know ultimately it all comes down to this.

You notice he doesn't just stop at hating on china ppl just for being china ppl. He goes on to show how superior ang moh culture, food, behavior is to EVERYTHING chinese regardless if they are china chinese or non china chinese.

Alot of ppl like him will claim they just hate china chinese and it's easy to not question him on that cos it's easy to hate on china ppl but when you probe deeper he actually hates his own race no matter the nationality.

lets look back at one of your retarded arguments.......the reason why english is spoken as a common language in US is because

one-the existence of many foreign languages in america thanks to its liberal immigration policy in the second half of the 20th century, especially in urban areas like New york?

two-the absence of the law to declare english as america's national language, even though we all know english is the lingua franca of america since the founding of america in 1700s and the fact that their founding fathers and the settlelers all SPOKE ENGLISH and their CONSTITUTION AND BILL IS WRITTEN IN ENGLISH?

HOW FUCKING RETARDED IS THAT?

THEN U WENT ON TO USE USA AS A LOGICAL JUSTIFICATION FOR EUROPE AND CHINA AS A JUSTIFICATION FOR USA AND SINGAPORE AS A JUSTIFICATION FOR USA IN UR TWISTY LOONY TUNES WORLD.WHY DONT U GO FUCK URSELF?

It's a fact that they need to speak a common language for a country and that is why english is spoken as a common language in the US. Do you know that english isn't the official language of the USA? That in regions of a metropolitan city say new york ppl speak all languages found all over the world yet if they wanted to communicate outside of their nationality or group they would speak english. In the US english is established as the de facto language for communication of everyone living in the states. There are many ppl in the states that cannot speak english like some mexicans etc and they aren't looked upon too fondly. Anyway it's the same in china in that the defacto language for communication is mandarin. Yes mandarin originated from the north of china not the south. It's the same with english in that it originated from a small island but is now used worldwide.

Do you know the in the EU they use english as a standard means of communication. Yes some regions use german, french etc but at the end of the day it's english that most citizens of the EU use to communicate with citizens from another country of the EU.

I am curious though why does it seem there aren't too many ppl offended at english compared to mandarin. Other than the french i don't hear a german going why should we use english? We were bombed by them during ww1 and 2 and american fought with us too why should we speak their language? Nope a german would be going well it's different today. We are the EU now. Here is my colleague from france. He doesn't speak german and i don't speak french let's speak english. OK done. A chinese would be going speak mandarin for what? Fuck them la even though there was never a war like ww1 and 2 proportions between the north and the southern chinese.

Don't get angry ah basket some of you sound so bloody offended. Really want to get to the bottom of this chinese dog, crab in a bucket syndrome displayed by chinese.

I see. If he's a chinese dog he's the biggest chinese dog around. These types are literally dogs on 2 legs. They are like LKY working for the japs type of standard.

You assuming that english is the national languge of the US doesn't mean it is. Proven to be wrong but acting like a mad barking dog around here.

FYI the number of people speaking in the language doesn't make it the national language. Malay is the national language of singapore but the majority of ppl here don't speak or use malay so see how you caught yourself in a bind. You try to justify yourself that english is the national language of the US due to the frequency it is spoken and by the number that speak it. Ok if we follow your logic then english or chinese and not malay should be the national language of singapore since like you claim it's dependent on the number that speak the language. Really stupid and vulgar.

like i said malay is the national language of singapore for historical reasons, the two are not the same alright?it dont matter if the majority of ppl here dont speak malay, the chinese was imported by the british over time, chinese people are not the original inhabitants of this island which by the way was part of johor and johor is part of malaya....malaya that time was already a kingdom and singapore and johor was part of that kingdom.....singapore only got its sovereignty in 1960s and up till that point singapore has been and always was part of the malay archipelago...

it was not my logic that english should be the national language of US because of the frequency....u retard....pls show where i ever posted that or said that?.....that is ur retard logic now u trying to put words in my mouth....

i said english should be the official language because the people who founded america was english or spoke english and their constitution written 200 years ago to form the foundation of america was in english.....

It's official that Malay is the national language in sg. Nothing to argue about.
English language is the working language in sg.

No need to resort to name calling as it doesn't make one less ignorant.

thats not the point, the point is we are analyzing the reason why malay is the national language in sg and why english should be the national language of america....

because some retards seem to think because our national language happen to be malay thats why all national languages are not the usual language the majority speaks..... failing to understand why our national language is malay and how chinese came to singapore in the first place.

You really are a dumb fuck. I searched that article cos you wouldn't provide a link. It came out in 2006. See the parts i highlighted in red. Anyway look at these links i have.

http://answers.usa.gov/system/templ...1012/article/3206/Official-Language-of-the-US

There is no "official" language for the United States, although some individual states list English as their official language. If you would like the United States or your state to adopt an official language, you should contact your elected officials.
The federal government is currently required to provide access to federal programs and federally assisted programs for people with limited English proficiency. To access more information about this topic, please visit the Limited English Proficiency website.

United States
No official language nationwide,

Now back to that article you posted. If you know how to read and let's hope you do. You would have read that they came up with a vote it was split along party lines all republicans excpet for one voted for it while the majority of democrats voted against it while only 9 voted for it. Let's hope you know how to read. It's an ammendment that may not even make it into the immigration bill that must be approved by the house of congress and afterwards it must be signed by the president who was then george bush. Suffice to say it didn't make it. I think it would be too much to ask of you to learn how to read on how the US govt actually works with 3 main govt bodies the senate, congress and the president but the sentence in that article already gives a rough idea how the US govt works but of course an imbecile like you wouldn't be able to figure it out.

In the article that you yourself posted there is this sentence here: Muddying the waters further, the Senate then passed by a 58-39 margin a more moderate amendment that declares English merely to be the "common unifying language of the US".

The article itself admits that english isn't the national language of the US and you cannot blame the article for putting that in the headline. Blame yourself for choosing an article that didn't even prove yourself correct.

Wtf you actually posted an article that didn't even prove you to be correct. Then again cannot fault you. You don't know how to read, you're too lazy to read long texts and you certainly as hell are too lazy to try and do research.

alright i realise many of the postings are abit rushed and incoherent so let me try to rephrase more succinctly.

first u assumed that english is not the national language of the US because of an oversight in the law to declare english as the national language in the constitution,

u claimed english is only used as a common language because of the large number of foreign languages spoken, even though they are immigrants that mostly arrived in the the 20th century.and national language should not be english.

next u claim malay is the national language of singapore but majority of ppl dont speak or use malay, overlooking the fact that singapore was malay land until 1960s and was under the jurisdiction of the malay kingdom but under the administration of the british overlords......we were granted independence only 3 years after malaysia's independence from the british

fourth the chinese are the majority of the population in singapore but technically we are all immigrants brought over by the british and had no claims over the land, also we were not citizens of british so basically we were only subjects of the british empire on Blue IC.

next u try to twist ur logic and put words in my mouth by claiming i was the one who said english should be the national language due to the frequency and the majority of population even though i did not say that and tried to claim our national language is malay as the reason why america's national language should be tamil or tagalog or whatever......clear signs of senility and dementia, which i understand is perfectly normal since quite a number senior citizens frequent this forum.....

You assuming that english is the national languge of the US doesn't mean it is. Proven to be wrong but acting like a mad barking dog around here.

ur right i didnt read it carefully, the bill may not have passed but what the fuck does it matter?

anyway english is still the de facto national language of america but not the de jure....which basically means that other languages are allowed to be used in official and documents and government correspondence........who gives a fuck?????
