In the 1984 GE, there was a massive 12.9% vote swing against the PAP.

This came hot on the heels of the 1981 Anson upset. Poor Pang I believe never recovering from the Anson Slap and he faded into oblivion after that.

So what caused the 1984 massive swing?

Was it the government's proposal to increase the drawdown age to 60 and then to 65?

Swing Singapore, a mass party, was first sponsored by the then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. The celebrations were held a week before the 1988 general elections, and hence was presumed by some to have political overtones. You forgot to mention that , one minister of finance was in charge, at that time, the one with the 'hum' thing, CPF rate was very high & we went into a RECESSION...this was one of the factor. I could not forget to this day, the pom pom 'girls' greeting GCT when he arrived at a polling station & that short darkie who got slapped, being arrogant & pompous in front of TV cameras...." move aside, I want to greet my supporters"... yah!

This is where you and many many others have got it wrong. The first generation of PAP leaders were the worse of the lot of PAP members and ministers. They were the group that imprisoned all their political opponents and closed all forms of mass media except the one that was part of the government. They were all part of a very brutal regime and we should not delude ourselves on this fact.
