Within days of the announcement of fare hikes, there was a major disruption on the North South line causing delays of up to 90 minutes on the southbound train between Sembawang and Marina Bay.
The disruption affected almost 20,000 passengers and many commuters felt that it was a clear demonstration that the fare hikes should not occur given the lack of improvements in service reliability over the years.
Despite this, the public transport council and SMRT both feel that the disruption and fare hikes are separate things and people should not look at them together.
Desmond Kuek, the CEO of SMRT had even said that the timing of the breakdown was “unfortunate”.
Meanwhile, Gerard Ee, the chairman of the PTC, said that the fare hike is in order to cover rising costs faced by the public transport operators and has nothing to do with the level of service reliability at the moment.
In fact, he explained that the operators would need to have good finances in order to even be able to improve their service reliability.
The PTC chairman scolded the public saying that most people don’t realise how costly it is to run transport. He said that 1 bus could cost up to $400,000 while one train is easily into the millions.
