ABU DHABI: PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has dedicated the United Arab Emirates' conferment of the Etihad Medal, the emirate state's highest award for a foreign leader, on him to the Malaysian people.

Downplaying his own contributions in enhancing bilateral ties with the UAE, he said the award, presented by Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed Zayed Al Nahyan, was testimony to the emirate government's gratitude to Malaysians for strong relationship between the two countries.

"I am touched by the Crown Prince's gesture. I have come to pay a courtesy call on him and the next thing he said was that he wanted to surprise me.

"He said, 'I want to give you this medal, the highest state award to a foreign leader, and this is for your contributions and Malaysia's role in many fields'," he said here yesterday on the second day of his three-day visit to UAE.

Najib, who is on his second state visit after assuming the prime ministership, said he held discussions with Sheikh Mohammed on greater tourism and higher education opportunities, resulting in the signing of memoranda of understanding between Malaysian leaders and their UAE counterparts.

He said Sheikh Mohammed was appreciative and looked forward to more investments between Malaysian businessmen and their UAE counterparts.

"We are looking forward to greater UAE investments, including the oil storage depot in Tanjung Piai, Johor, besides the Tun Razak Exchange in Kuala Lumpur.

"We are very happy with UAE's Islamic religious and endowment authority's decision to build a mosque equipped with an Islamic learning centre and a centre for Permata in Bandar Malaysia.

"Once ready, the mosque will be the largest in Southeast Asia."

Najib said a new area for Malaysia to tap into the UAE was its high-technology, know-how on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which the emirate had lent support during the foreign intrusion in Lahad Datu, Sabah, last year.

The prime minister later gave away traditional food items, including chicken rendang and other dried foodstuff, to a group of Malaysian soldiers attending training with the UAE military.
