South Korea is rated number one according to this ranking* by Pearson and the EIU. And other education league tables also rank it highly.

But we know that over 200 Southern Korean students obeyed orders, and drowned as a result. They behaved like sheep rather than intelligent human beings. They were not sceptical enough. Is this what education all about? Behaving like sheep?

When the PAP govt and its trumpeters and drummers in our constructive, nation-building media laud our education system citing these int’l league tables, remember the Korean kids who drowned. My test would be, https://atans1.wordpress.com/2014/05/11/why-global-education-league-rankings-are-meaningless/

The koreans kids had faith in their supposedly well trained ship captain and crew. These crews were educated when the korean education system sucks. The kids did not know about this. It wasn't their fault.

All human being with sound mind are supposed to be born with some kind of instint.

But in some places, school education seems to be killing away these instint from the kids.

In this south Korea tragedy, my first question is why all those kids simply listen to the captain's instruction without any urge to get out and find out what was going on.

When anyone in a ship notice the ship was sinking or going to overturn, the first instinct should be to get out to the deck. Why? Because if the ship is really sinking, the passenger will not sink with the ship.

It's sad to see many young kids die together in that manner.

Imagine how many dad and mom are heart broken..

To blame it on the education system is too simplistic.

Strong cultural forces are at play. Korea is now the most Confucianist country in the world (years of communist rule has eroded Confucian values in its land of birth, China). There is strong reverence for elders and parents (good) to the point of unthinking obedience (bad). You do not disobey your senior, whether he's your teacher, parent or society leader. The other ugly aspect is the rampant male chauvinism in the family and workplace.

When I was in Korea, schoolkids routinely gave up their subway seats to the elderly. They bow to older people, and do not dare look them in the eye when speaking to them.

If you knew Korean culture, the children's unthinking obeisance to the crew leaders would be perfectly understandable.
