A first language (also native language, mother tongue, arterial language, or L1) is the language(s) a person has learned from birth[1] or within the critical period,
But most people learn hokkien or their dialect at home as the first language that they speak. So, what is gay Loong saying? we should go back to dialects? Or else, by his explanation on Facebook, it appears that Singlish (the intermingling of other languages in the speech) is ok. SINGAPORE — Mother tongue languages are “live languages” that will evolve and change over time, and Singaporeans need to not only speak and write them correctly, but also colloquially, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
Mr Lee made these remarks in a Facebook post on a BBC report on how it was increasingly common in China for people to use English words — such as “Wi-Fi” — in spoken and written Chinese without translating them into Chinese equivalents or similar-sounding Chinese characters — a trend that has sparked debate in the country.
The same thing is happening to other languages, said Mr Lee.
“If you listen to Malay spoken in Malaysia or Tamil in India, you will often hear English words mixed in,” he said. “The reality is that a language is a live, changing thing. It constantly absorbs words, concepts and usages from foreign languages, so long as people are using it in their daily lives.”
If this did not happen, a language would become dead and studied only by scholars, such as Latin or Sanskrit, he said.
As Singapore does its utmost to keep the mother tongue languages alive, “we should accept that they will evolve and change over time”, Mr Lee said.
