SINGAPORE: A new survey by the non-profit Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI) and research firm Align Group aims to find out what workplace happiness means for employees in Singapore and how well organisations are scoring.

Workplace happiness goes beyond salary and benefits, but organisations often focus on the bottomline, and neglect their employees' personal well-being, said SHRI Vice-President Goh Jin Hian.

Dr Goh said: "It's easy to say that people are its greatest assets, but many organisations then face a high turnover, which is exactly what's happening in many organisations today."

Studies showed happy workers work better, are more creative and more likely to stay on the job.

Dr Goh said knowing exactly what makes employees happy could be the next "holy grail" for companies operating in a tight labour market like Singapore.

The survey has support from the labour movement, and will be tapping the National Trades Union Congress's database of 800,000 workers.

Vivek Kumar, secretary of NTUC Membership Council, said: "This survey helps us identify, at different life stages of the workers, what are the areas we can do more, the areas they are already satisfied and happy. That then helps us fine-tune our programmes."

From April to July, anyone can take the survey on this website and full results are expected in September.

It is possible to take the survey multiple times, but only the first result will be taken for compilation if there are multiple entries from the same IP address.

Similarly, only results from people working in Singapore will be tallied as national data.

In all cases, individual results are strictly confidential and will not be accessible by employers, said SHRI.

There are 30 questions, including whether one feels respected, or feels fairly treated at work.

At the end of the survey the participant gets a score out of 10, and that is the workplace happiness index.

HR experts said a certain degree of dissatisfaction is necessary to keep employees challenged and motivated to do better.

i am happy because i am overworked and underpaid....hooray hooray!!!!

I've been reading this kind of shit for the last 30 years and nothing has changed.

Get a proper union (not NTUC) and workers will be happier.

very bad ethics by sinkie companies, how can workers be happy?

in anz bank, workers are to call their colleagues when they get back to work in the early morning on mondays, greetings and when they converse in how they spent their weekends and so on...
there is definitely more human touch than sinkie owned companiesor and HR run by sinkies...sinkies are the worst...

What a bloody waste of time. Workers are paid to work not gossip about their lame weekend escapades.

Anyone who gossips during office hours should be fired on the spot.

and by the same token anyone who logs into sammyboy.com during office hours should be immediately promoted
