Malaysia: Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has advised the people to shop wisely instead of complaining about price hikes after buying a whole chicken for RM1.
In an official ceremony to launch the "Fair Priced Shops" award, Najib noted that 269 premises surveyed nationwide qualified and this was a great government effort to help consumers make "informed decisions".
"Don't complain that barang naik (prices going up) because you have choices.
"If we can do some comparison, we can still buy our necessities at very reasonable prices," Najib said at NSK Trade City, Jalan Kuchai Lama.
Najib said that he was happy to pay the bargain price at NSK today, while making his rounds with Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumer Minister Hasan Malek.
"I've bought one, so there's 999 left," he said with a grin, adding that this special price applied only to 1,000 chickens on sale at NSK.
But even without the sale, PM Najib noted that NSK's normal priced chicken were selling at only RM6.60, lower than even the farmer's market price of RM7.70.
In KL, five shops were given the "Fair Price award" by Najib today. Besides NSK, the other supermarket recipients were 99 Speedmart, Econsave Cash & Carry and two eateries Haslan Trading and Warung Indah.
Of the 269 fair priced awarded outlets nationwide, 114 were for grocery stores, 96 were supermarkets and 59 were eateries.
Shops interested to participate in future rounds of the award can register online at www.1pengguna.com before April 14.
