Ukraine crisis a reminder small countries must defend themselves: PM Lee

The ongoing crisis in Ukraine is a reminder that small countries must defend themselves and cannot rely solely on international treaties or the promises of others, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his first comments on the escalating crisis.

That’s why Singapore must always maintain a strong Singapore Armed Forces and Home Team, as well as a capable Foreign Affairs Ministry to strengthen the country's ties with friends and allies, he added in his Facebook post on Thursday.

“Only then can Singapore be safe and secure,” the Singaporean leader said.

"Ukraine is bigger than Singapore, but much smaller than its neighbour, Russia. For the last few months, the country has been in turmoil. Two weeks ago, President Yanukovich fled, and his pro-Russian government collapsed. Russian troops then intervened in the Crimea, a part of Ukraine that used to belong to Russia, and where Russia still has a naval base," he wrote.

PM Lee also warned that if war breaks out in Ukraine, the global economy will be affected, including Singapore’s.

“During the Budget debate, we always pay attention to local issues – healthcare, housing, public transport. But we must not lose sight of what is happening in the outside world, and how faraway events can affect us,” the Singaporean leader added.

He also expressed the country’s stance on the situation in Ukraine.

“We condemn any unprovoked invasion of a sovereign country, whatever the pretext. All countries, big and small, must observe international law. This is vital to a small country like Singapore,” PM Lee said.

  • These days we no longer hear of "Total Defense". It used to be actively promoted by the Gov when Peter Lim was chief of Civil Defense. Someone pushing the FT policy must have realized it works against their goal of bringing the foreigners to take over our land and other assets. They even managed to... More

PM Lee, you talk about defending ourselves. How is this feasible when we are losing the singapore core in most important industries like financial, IT, engineering, healthcare, legal, etc.

Do you think foreigners and PRs, i.e. those who are not born and bred in Singapore, can ever love... More

PM Lee's right in saying that small countries must always be prepared to defend themselves. The thing is that we mistake a bigger gun for better defence. Technology is all well and good, but it is people defending their homes that really makes a difference in any war. As it is, we are not treating... More

The situation in Ukraine / Russia is slightly more complicated than was presented in the article. Saying that "a big country is bullying a small one" is an oversimplification. Here's the brief account of events:

Geographically, it is an uphill task to protect our small island nation. We cannot afford to fight our war at home and we have insufficient manpower to fight our enemies abroad. Even if we survive an all out attack, it will take years to rebuild our nation. So, the answer is to prevent an attack... More

I really don't believe that Singapore has anything to worry about when it comes to being attacked or invaded by a larger country. The first principle of invasion is to gain something from the invasion.Singapore has nothing to offer any country such as natural resources, air superiority, blockage of... More

PM Lee is right, preparing defences is a must however, we must be cautious of our approach. Social harmony, not defence, is the upmost important for the safety and security of a small country like Ukraine and Singapore. The real poison for Ukraine is its social divide between the 'Western camp' and 'Russian camp', not its lack of military power. With 'manipulation' from both camps for... More

Pinky is really taking Sinkees as small kids.

Ukraine problem is complicated, you cannot just say Russia is bad to occupy Crimea, because the problem started off with a pro western mob mounted a coup against a legitimate government and implement anti-russia policies like removing Russian as an offical language. Of course the Russian part of the country is not happy.

Moreover, this part of Ukraine originally belong to Russia and a treaty allows Ukraine to manage the place and permit a lease on the Black Sea naval base.

Fir Pinky to use Ukraine as an example fir Singapore is to insult ALL Sinkees 3rd class cutizens on their inability to think.

After all he had a cushion life as the world's youngest BG.

Sg is already occupied by foreigners with the blessings of pap, what's there to protect?

Traitor Pinkie, the Ukrainians and Tatar Muslims are minority in Crimea. The population of Crimea makes up of 30% Ukrainians, 10% Tartar Muslims and 60% Russians and that is why President Putin is brazen enough to take back Crimea without any hesitation.

What the fuck is there to defend when you're going all out to take us native S'poreans to become minority in S'pore?

n deciding on its expenditure and choosing cutting edge defence technology, does MINDEF consider that if we leap too far ahead, there is a risk of spurring an arms race, as countries in our region may feel under pressure to keep up with us? This could lead to even greater spending in the future, which may be unsustainable.

After WW2, large numbers of Russians were send to the Ukraine to repopulate that country. This is the root cause of the problems today. The native Ukrainian felt that the new Russians did not integrate, kept their own Russian language schools and culture and were allowed to discriminate against the native Ukrainians because they were backed by Moscow under the old USSR. This should sound familiar to SIngaporeans. The PAP has basically allowed SIngapore to be re-populated by PRCs under the pretext of the need for economic growth and low native population birth rates. These PRCs act like lords, keeping their own language and culture, not integrating with the locals and enjoying the protection of the PAP as well as additional benefits not available to locals such as free scholarships, reserved spots in unis, etc.

SO what Gay Loong does not realize is that the problems with Ukraine today started with the allowing of a large foreign population to enter and live in the country. This population was backed by Russia. This has nothing to do with a strong army or strong defence. If the day comes when China openly backs and supports their PRC citizens in SIngapore by asking and agitating for more rights and benefits for them, we will have the same situation as the Ukraine.

All the more we should have a fully professional force. You see the Ukranians defecting left right centre. And they depend on a conscript army just like SG, and their soldiers are not even defending a country filled to the brim with foreigners. Meanwhile in Singapore, our conscript soldiers are paid poverty wages to defend our nation of foreigners. Any guesses, how it will turn out when we get invaded?

At least their conscripts are willing to fight. SAF? heehee.

IF terror orgs managed to seize power in Malaysia or Indonesia, all hell will break loose. THe burning horde of hell's minions will be unleashed on Singapore. Then it will be up to the righteous men and women of the RSAF, RSN, and Singapore Army to vanish these monsters. ;)
