BBC News ran a story on 2 Oct featuring twenty of their international readers explaining why they had renounced their citizenship from their respective birth nations.

Buried in the list was an Alex Liang, 37 who is now a proud British citizen:

“I was born and bred in Singapore but moved to the UK when I was 21 and eventually naturalised as a British citizen after seven years here – I am 37 today. I left Singapore because I had no faith in the government there. Singaporean males were discriminated against by the government because of the compulsory national service and many years of reservist obligations afterwards. That is compounded by the fact that the Singapore government is actively wooing skilled migrants to Singapore. Their “foreign talent” programme gives these migrants all kinds of advantages that locals are not entitled to. I gave two years and four months of my life to serve in the army and my reward is to be treated like a second-class citizen. I wasn’t prepared to fight the system, so I simply left and settled in the UK instead.”
Alex Liang, London

You know what?

Alex struck a chord in me with his comments on NS.

I am 33 now and I am very sick and tired of the stupid discriminatory NS system and ten additional “work year” (named such so that they can not count a year when you are not called back for in-camp training) reservist with additional IPPT/RT/IPT burdens.

I gave two and a half years of my life to full-time national service. I completed this in 2001. It has been 12 years since. Way passed ten years from my ORD date. I find it ridiculous that I still have to serve at least 4 more “work years” – likely near to my 40s before I can get discharged from this slavery system.

In the mean time, I am subjected to silly school boy hair check at least once a year when I get called back for in-camp training. Not that I like keeping long hair, but I would at least like to have the option to make that decision myself instead of having MINDEF and SAF dictate that for me into my middle age. I am not a full-time soldier. I did not sign up for a career in the army. I was conscripted.

Not everybody like being soldiers or take well to regimentation. Two and a half years in the army was more than enough for me.

Not everybody is born fit and with a physique built to pass IPPT up to their 40s. There are some people who just cannot pass. In any case, my health and my fitness are my own choices in life which I prefer to take my own responsibility for. I hate having MINDEF and SAF dictate these for me.

I hate being sent warning letters each time I forget to notify MINDEF when I travel. I am not a criminal. My only crime was being born a Singaporean male.

I hate being sent a “birthday wish” SMS from MINDEF to remind me to take my IPPT or risk getting charged. Thank you. You are always the first to wish me happy birthday without fail each year and spoil my mood for the day.

I hate having to spend between 18 to 20 weekends a year doing RT/IPT when I could have better spent the time bonding with my son.

I hate constantly being reminded that MINDEF and SAF can charge me and send me to jail for stuff like failing to take my IPPT or failing to notify them when I travel. Like I mentioned earlier, I did not sign up for this. Being a soldier is only a part-time obligation, not a full-time job.

Google defines a slave as “a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them.”

Does this definition reminds you of NS and reservist?

I am not as talented as Alex Liang to be able to get a ticket out of Singapore at such a young age.

I still love this country and my family, friends and work here more than the cons of NS discrimination.

Nonetheless, if I ever choose to migrate out of Singapore. MINDEF and SAF are highly responsible.

Seriously, it is time to review the whole NS and reservist system.

Yes, Sir. yes, Sir.

Is there any compelling reason why 1st generation PRs who are able bodied should NOT serve NS?
Please list them here.

If our precious foreign talents get injured in training, Who is responsible? You? Me? Government?

Cannot, right?

There's nothing wrong with NS. It keeps you fit, young and healthy plus every year you get to meet all your old friends and you'll have a great time together.

I was always very sad when each reservist stint came to an end as it meant the having to go back to doing real work instead of just enjoying myself without a care in the world.

The article was spot on.

This 13 year cycle was the dumb fuck incompetent LHL idea. It was for his own agenda to become a BG. For an army to qualify to have BGs in their army it required a numbers of army units and soldiers.

This dumbfuck LHL still don't know how to reform this NSF outdated conscript and he just doesn't get it. A dumbfuck leader must be get rid off.

Next GE get more oppositions to his AMK GRC to get rid of him, for the good of Singapore. Need to break up this bad karma for Singapore get of PAP to abolish NSF problem, a stick in the arse for male Singaporeans.

Even in manufacturing industry, young production workers. girls, of age 18-25 are sought after because at these age they are single, sharper and productive, After 25years old they are considered slow, get married and has family problems disrupting the production.

NSF the same men after 25 are slow and many also married and have family problems and do not have time for NS stints. Move on to the next phase of life. At certain age you do certain things and married and have children is also a nation building to procreate to sustain the nation population.

When you have a bully leader and only think of his own agenda Singapore will fail. Signs of bad karma already surfaced if Singapore still have this incompetent LHL elected as MP and lead Singapore as PM. VTO him soon as possible.

talk cock sing song again.

Yeah, only if you work for PAP gahment civil servants that is OK. Whatever ways you get paid, who fuck care if you are serving NS or back to civil services.

So don't speak for the mass.

U know what Mr Leong? I agree completely with u! I say this at the risk of being labelled as a boot licker to u and the government. But I don't care about those unreasonable haters of mine. Ultimately, I am accountable to GOD. And I believe it is important for me to speak up for what is right and just as GOD has commanded me to do so.

NS bridges the societal divides. This is one of the very few avenues in which the underclass get to mix with the creme de la creme. I am not ashamed to admit I am from the downtrodden class. My father was a meter reader with PUB and then SP. My mother was a housewife till I was 17. She then worked as a a clinic assistant with Raffles Medical group. She also held a few other low-skilled jobs in the F&B sector. Currently, at the age of 57, she is working as a market vegetable stall assistant.

As you know, people from the underclass tend to nurse an irrational hatred towards the ruling elite. My parents are like this too. In essence, they felt the ruling elite was tekaning the people at the bottom. My parents' viewpoints are not totally wrong;but to focus on the negativity.. It only magnifies the negativity energy. They are entrenched in the victim, reactive mode. My parents are unable to transcend into a proactive, take responsibility attitude to resolve their life problems. Being their son, I was very affected psychological by them. Negative influence. I was like them most of my life. But I thank GOD for HIS great mercy on me. HE showed me the errors of my ways. I started being proactive, focusing on the positive aspects of adversities. I tried to learn from each setback. And this attitude brought me from being a Sec 3 dropout to doing well for my O level. I did my Os at the age of 32.

I enter NYP SBM Diploma in Business Management course in 2013. And I got into the director's list for the 1st semester despite having to juggle a weekend job and my studies. I am a procrastinating king too. I studied only a few days before the major exams.

OK, enough my life story.

To conclude, NS has many benefits. It creates racial harmony and promotes closer ties between people from all walks of life. NS is a very important societal glue without which our Singapore society would have collapsed long ago.

Those who 'enjoy' army life; not doing real work have the option of signing on as a SAF regular to keep fit, young and healthy 24/7 their whole life till retirement with fellow SAF male buddies for a great time together. Imagine all that and getting paid well for NOT DOING REAL WORK.

There should be NO NEED for NS conscription at all as scores of army loving males would be rushing to sign on for the 'good life'

I have never worked for the PAP or the civil service. By the time I did my last 4 reservist stints. I was already running my own company.

However, because I structured the business so that it was not dependent upon my being on call 24 hours a day, it continued to earn revenue during the period when I was away.

NS is like a vacation. It's great for a short period but you can't spend your whole life not using your grey matter. It'll calcify. That's what has happened to many Singaporeans who expect the government to do all their thinking for them. That's why this forum is full of ridiculous rubbish and naive ideas. Their brains don't work anymore.

While I was working in Singapore, I always considered myself very luck to have two vacations a year. The first was my annual leave. The second was my reservist stint. The rest of the time I worked hard to save for retirement.

talk so much of your life with nothing to do with NS slavery.

Do you know what is reform? Serving NSF in the 60s to 80s are different from today. Citizenships are given freely to male foreigners without having to serve NS and still jobs from you. At the prime age, males Singaporeans loss 2 years of their life doing slavery work when foreigners have 2 years more productive with their careers?

What has it to do with what you say?

Want me to remind you that even LHL NSF was disrupted and sent to Havard under free scholarship bullshit thing. So LHL NSF can be disrupted means national defense is not for everyone and bullshit but for poor peasants sons like you.

Thank you for your life story. It's indeed very interesting. I have added to your points.

wow, cats out of the hat?

you can have the NS vacant to suit you but not for others.

Not true that Sinkies expect PAP to do everything for them it is a PAP propaganda spread by Shitty Time, a PAPig dog.

There were no avenues to complaints and all avenues were shuts because PAP are bullies. What you See Singapore today will fail soon, it was built on sinking soil not on solid rock.
