On 14 Oct 1953, a commando unit called Unit 101, under the command of Ariel Sharon attacked Qibya, in Jordanian-controlled West Bank. The majority of the victims were civilians.
69 Palestinians were killed that night, mostly women and children. 50 homes were demolished. Sharon later wrote : “The orders were clear: Qibya was to be an example for everyone.”
UN observers on the ground documented: “Israeli soldiers moved about blowing up buildings, firing into doorways and windows with automatic weapons and throwing hand grenades.”
According to UN observers, “bullet-riddled bodies near the doorways and multiple bullet hits on the doors of the houses indicated inhabitants were forced to remain inside their homes”.
