Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob, who chairs a new People's Action Party seniors group (PAP.SG), speaks to Andrea Ong about the advocacy group and tackling ageism. She also takes stock of her first year as Speaker and Parliament's performance ahead of its mid-term break this year.

Why did the PAP decide to set up this group and what are your key priorities and aims?

Because of the rapidly ageing population, the number of elderly people has increased tremendously. The party wanted to have a greater focus on their needs and how to serve them, very much like what we have done for women as well as the young. The objective of PAP.SG is essentially to raise issues or to help shape policies and programmes on cross-cutting issues affecting our seniors, on matters like their quality of life, the manner of their care as well as their security. We also want to look at encouraging greater volunteerism, both among our healthy seniors as well as the young, and at innovative practices to reach out to our seniors.

We also hope to give input on and shape the outcome of the MediShield Life review.

It is good to push PAP to do something more for elderly and not expect elderly to work in menial jobs to support themselves in twilight years. PAP got money to throw to foreigners should have money to spend on elderly who have contributed much more to nation building...

I totally agree with you.

More and more Singaporeans are getting older and older and attention will be focused on their continual good health. Many are already enjoying many medical benefits through CHAS.

Samsters have already taken stock of her first year as Speaker and the conclusion is that she doesn't understand that she is supposed to be politically impartial.

This buffoon of a Speaker can :kma:

Politically impartial

Speakers must be politically impartial. Therefore, on election the new Speaker must resign from their political party and remain separate from political issues even in retirement. However, the Speaker will deal with their constituents' problems like a normal MP.

Speakers and general elections

Speakers still stand in general elections. They are generally unopposed by the major political parties, who will not field a candidate in the Speaker's constituency - this includes the original party they were a member of. During a general election, Speakers do not campaign on any political issues but simply stand as 'the Speaker seeking re-election'.

To be honest, when I am old and sick of it all, I will choose such a path, not be a burden on the family and to go with dignity,,death is part of life,,deal with it,

yes, but not many people have the courage and the peace of mind to walk this path..

many will want to cling on...at the expense of paying millions to doctors and hospitals.....

have to courage to live, and have the dignity to leave - in peace.

That is why sometimes I understand why the PAP does what it does,,to avoid going down the way ang mors have fucked up their countries,,but PAP is making it worse,,as it has gone into rent seeking behaviour,,,old people or anyone who are no use to society need to make their own decisions and not expect the tax payers to pay for their every whim and fancy,,but the left wing bleeding heart liberal assholes will argue that every one has a right except me,,,guess that is the way the world is

On the other hand, the seniors should not make themselves so useless and so dependent on the government and abuse the welfare benefits given to them. Many on CHAS cards are really making themselves more sick and seeking more medical treatment simply because their medicla bills are subsidised by the government.

I think we have to strike a good and delicate balance. This is a good and pragmatic government and we should not abuse and exploit the system of welfarism.

PAP will take care of our old citizens by recommending them to go for more upgrading courses at NTUC so that they are able to work in menial jobs that pay them less than $700 a month..

And PAP will tell these old folks to work till the day they drop dead..

Why only now?
They are supposed to have started the silver (hair) program many years ago with hotshots Phillp Noel Yeo & Wong Meng Meng. What happened and what have they done or have not done?? NO accountability just like the PAP govt.
